Composite Grand Trines: A Relationship Gift With an Edge
A Composite Grand Trine is the mother of all relationship stabilizers. In this configuration, planets in all three signs of the same element in a composite chart form a harmonious angle (approximately 120 degrees) with each other. A magnetic, closed circuit of energy is created and the resulting relationship can become an island for two people. This sounds ideal, but the inherent harmony can become too much of a good thing. Energy in a trine follows the path of least resistance, so a stable but repetitive cycle dominates the entire relationship.
The Composite Grand Water Trine
Think of a cross between an oasis and a whirlpool. This couple is so emotionally connected they can draw complete sustenance from each other. They not only share each other’s joy and pain, they are each other’s joy and pain. Let’s say the trine consists of composite Saturn in Cancer, Venus in Scorpio and Moon in Pisces. Saturn in Cancer can give the relationship an “us against them” attitude.
The restrictive qualities of Saturn combine with sheltering Cancer to provide a bulwark against the outside world. The trine to Venus in possessive Scorpio can indicate controlling and/or exclusive love for each other. The Moon in Pisces (fantasy) hooked into Saturn (reality) can mean that this couple creates their own dream world. What was comforting can easily become stagnant.
The Composite Grand Earth Trine
If a Grand Water Trine is emotionally binding, a Grand Earth Trine is binding, period. Here is the relationship that is so grounded it seems to be made from concrete. In this example, Mercury is in Taurus, the Sun is in Virgo and Mars is in Capricorn. Mercury in survival-focused Taurus trine the Sun (identity) in finicky Virgo means the relationship evolves obsessively along conventional lines. Where will we live? Who balances the checkbooks? Mars (energy level) in structured Capricorn gives the relationship ambition. This couple maps out where they will be in 5, 10, 15 years. They work as a team and build their financial future or get divorced but remain bound by support payments and joint accounts.
The Composite Grand Air Trine
While Earth and Water trines can be heavy, Air seems like the perfect antidote. This relationship is always buzzing with conversation. Cerebral soul mates, this couple can flow along with ideas blending seamlessly. The problem is that they can become so detached that these ideas never manifest into anything solid. Let’s put the Sun in Gemini, trine Uranus in Libra and the Moon in Aquarius. The identity (Sun) of the relationship revolves around mutual ideas (Gemini). Even when connected to rebellious Uranus there’s still an even flow of energy so they can incorporate ideas of change without disruption. This blends perfectly with their mutual need (Moon) to stand apart (Aquarius). It’s all very civilized, but the urge to analyze instead of act can be the Achilles Heel of this relationship. This is the couple who will remain friends if they do split up.
The Composite Grand Fire Trine
This relationship takes center stage. There is little chance of boredom with all that fire energy zipping around, but so much heat does need an outlet. Venus in Leo trine Mars in Sagittarius and Pluto in Aries gives this couple passion and intensity. They are proud (Leo) of their love and have an instinctive rhythm with each other (Mars in Sagittarius). Pluto adds intensity and a drive to move forward (Aries). However, it’s possible that the transformative urge (Pluto ) of the relationship becomes frustrated because it has nowhere to go. Pride and passion can turn into outbursts of temper and clashes of ego. The potential for creativity is high, but only if the energy is focused on something constructive and not trapped in the endless cycle of the trine.
As always, much depends on the house positions of the planets. What areas of the relationship will the trine manifest itself in? Are there contacts to any other planets in the composite chart? Chances are that not every single planet is crammed into three elements, so you would look outside the trine to balance the energy. This is a gift with an edge: getting along with each other seems to happen without trying, and this is precisely what can cut you when you’re not looking.
