Composite Neptune: Sink or Swim?

A while back I wrote this post about Neptune in synastry, and how its magic could manifest as a higher connection or delusion in one person’s impact on the other.

This post will look at Neptune in the composite chart.

Composite Neptune manifests in the relationship as a whole rather than one person casting a spell over the other. It can be an area of shared illusion, romance, or weakness. Composite Neptune can keep the relationship afloat, or it can be the leak that sinks your ship. And it’s often the most difficult composite energy to get a handle on.

Neptune in the Composite Houses

The house that composite Neptune occupies is where reality and material security are transcended in the relationship.

This can show up in various ways, depending on the aspects Neptune makes to the composite planets, Nodes or angles.

Neptune in the 2nd House suggests material security is not approached traditionally. A trine to composite Venus suggests a free-flowing attitude about mutual security. You and your partner focus on higher subjects like fulfilling your creative purpose together.

Neptune trine Venus elevates your shared love into mystical romanticism, and mundane issues like paying the rent may not be a primary concern.

This doesn’t mean you’re rich. You and your lover may spend what you have like water, living paycheck to paycheck while not really caring about it. But if 2nd House Neptune makes a hard square to composite Venus, there is tension between how you express your love for each other and your mutual security.

Lack of money may be an area of concern , because when you come together you have difficulty managing your money. Or one person’s spending habits may be deceptive. Neptune square composite Venus creates a question mark over the reality of your love.

This aspect is often seen when one or both partners are not upfront about what they want.

Neptune and the Composite Angles/Nodes

Composite Neptune conjunct the angles (within 4 to 5 degrees) gives Neptune prominence in the relationship.

Conjunct the composite 1st House cusp, it can be difficult to separate mutual fantasy from reality regarding the identity of the relationship. Is it a dream come true, or a big lie?

Aspects to composite planets will fill in the details. Other people may question why the two of you are together, or they may project their own issues onto the relationship.

Neptune conjunct the 4th House cusp can make it difficult to build a stable home together. The composite 4th is the foundation of the relationship, and Neptune can base that foundation on nostalgic (and unrealistic) dreams about the past.

Owning a home together can present challenges with domestic finances or home repairs. If Neptune is receiving easy aspects from other planets (like an uplifting conjunction to Jupiter or a stabilizing trine to Saturn) this energy can enable the building of a dream home/family.

Neptune conjunct the 7th House cusp can make the relationship vulnerable to third parties (deception or affairs) or it can create a hyper-idealized vision of what cooperation means in the relationship.

In some cases, one person may end up sacrificing everything (more likely if Neptune makes hard aspects to composite planets or the Nodes). Neptune conjunct the 10th House cusp can give the two of you an idealistic vision of your future together, or a lack of mutual focus about career, success or status.

Neptune square the composite Nodes means it is the relationship’s skipped step; it’s the main issue that needs to be overcome before the relationship can move forward. That issue will be defined by the house that Neptune sits in, but generally it will be an area where the relationship “leaks.”

There may be a lack of boundaries between partners, or the relationship will be vulnerable to outside influences.

Aspects to Neptune

While all hard aspects from composite Neptune can be tough to deal with, a few stand out.

Neptune square, opposite or sometimes conjunct composite Mars can make sexual relations and mutual actions very difficult. No matter what houses are involved, Neptune undermines Mars’ energy. Scenarios can include coming together in search of a sexual fantasy, only to encounter disappointment.

These aspects indicate that the relationship weakens one or both of you. Neptune in hard aspect to the Sun (the relationship’s purpose) or Moon (shared emotions) indicates that misunderstanding, confusion or deception will be major themes.

In contrast, easy aspects from Neptune (trines and sextiles) can describe how the relationship has an extra dose of compassion, romanticism or connection. It’s how the two of you can transcend difficulties when the going gets rough.

For example, a trine between Neptune and Mercury can dissolve boundaries so the two of you sense each other’s thoughts. There will be times when words are not even necessary. Neptune trine the composite Moon suggests you are each other’s emotional balm; the relationship is where you both turn for healing and understanding.

When dealing with a challenging composite Neptune, know that there’s a mutual blind spot. It can be difficult to address, because both partners must confront the truth. Very often, the relationship itself is like a drug. It’s difficult to think clearly when you’re under the influence.

The best you can do is identify the area where something in the relationship is being sacrificed or eroded, and make an effort (together) to stop that erosion. Confront the habit, or lie, or addiction.

Know that this will always be a weak area in the relationship because you cannot fix composite aspects.
