The basics

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It shows where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the zodiac and the angles they made to each other. Astrologers read it as a blueprint of your personality: what drives you, what you need, how you love and where you’re headed.

Your Sun sign, the one you read horoscopes for, is just one point on that map. The rest of your chart is why two people with the same Sun sign can be completely different.

Before you start

What you need to calculate your birth chart

  • 1Your birth dateThis sets where the Sun and every planet were.
  • 2Your birth timeAs exact as you can get it. It decides your rising sign and houses, which shift every few minutes. Your birth certificate is the best source.
  • 3Your birth cityIt sets your time zone, including the daylight saving rules for your birth year, and your place on Earth.

Don’t know your birth time?

You’ll still get your Sun sign and the sign of every planet. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so on some birthdays it changes signs; when that happens, the calculator shows you both options. Your rising sign and houses need a birth time, so try your birth certificate, a baby book or a parent’s memory, then come back and add it.

Your Big Three: Sun, Moon and rising

Most astrologers read these three placements first. Together they sketch the outline of who you are.

  • ☉︎Sun signYour core identity and what you’re here to do. It’s the engine of your personality.
  • ☽︎Moon signYour emotional needs, your instincts and what makes you feel safe. People who know you well usually know your Moon.
  • ↑︎Rising signHow you come across and meet the world. It’s the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born, and it sets up every house in your chart.

The cast

The planets in your birth chart

The conversation

Aspects: how your planets talk to each other

Aspects are the angles between planets. They show which parts of you work together and which ones argue. The orb is how far an aspect is from exact: the smaller the orb, the louder it is in your life. Your calculated chart links each aspect to our natal aspect guides, like Venus trine Mars or Saturn opposite Moon.

  • ☌︎Conjunction · 0°Two planets blend and act as one.
  • ⚹︎Sextile · 60°An easy opening you have to choose to use.
  • □︎Square · 90°Friction that pushes you to grow.
  • △︎Trine · 120°Natural talent and easy flow.
  • ☍︎Opposition · 180°A tug of war you learn to balance, often played out with other people.

Questions

Birth chart FAQ

Is this birth chart calculator really free?

Yes. There is no signup and no email required. Enter your birth date, time and city and your full chart appears on the page.

How accurate is this birth chart?

The positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical data professional astrology software uses. Your chart is only as accurate as your birth time, though: being off by even 15 minutes can change your rising sign or move a planet into a different house.

What house system do you use?

Placidus, the most widely used house system in Western astrology. For births very far north or south, where Placidus breaks down, the chart switches to Equal houses.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

Tick “I don’t know my birth time” and you will still get your Sun sign, almost always your Moon sign, and the sign of every planet. Your rising sign and houses need a birth time, so they are left out rather than guessed.

What is the difference between a birth chart and a horoscope?

Your birth chart is fixed: it is the sky at the moment you were born. A horoscope describes how the planets moving today interact with that chart. Sun sign horoscopes use only your Sun sign, while a personal horoscope uses your whole chart.

Do I need to calculate my chart again next time?

No. Your chart is saved in this browser, so it is here when you come back. Your natal chart never changes, so you only need to calculate it once.
