How the Celtic Cross works
Pick ten cards and they'll be laid out in the traditional Celtic Cross order. It's a lot of information, so give yourself a minute. Read the first two cards together, then work outward.
The ten positions
- 1. Present. The heart of the matter as it stands today.
- 2. Challenge. What's crossing you: the obstacle or tension you have to work with.
- 3. Past. Recent events that set this situation in motion.
- 4. Future. What's coming up next in the short term.
- 5. Above. Your conscious goal, the outcome you're aiming for.
- 6. Below. What's going on underneath: feelings or motives you might not be admitting.
- 7. Advice. How to approach the situation. Often the most practical card in the spread.
- 8. External. Other people and outside forces affecting things.
- 9. Hopes and fears. What you want and what scares you, which are often the same thing.
- 10. Outcome. Where it's heading if the current path holds.
Tips for reading a big spread
Count the Major Arcana. Four or more means this is a significant chapter, not a passing phase. Notice which suit dominates, and whether the outcome card agrees or argues with the Above card: that tension tells you whether what you want and where you're headed are lined up. Every card links to its full meaning.
Celtic Cross Tarot Spread FAQ
What is the Celtic Cross tarot spread?
It's a ten-card spread and one of the oldest and most widely used in tarot. Six cards form a cross that describes the situation, and four cards in a column describe you, your surroundings, your hopes and fears, and the likely outcome.
When should I use the Celtic Cross instead of a three card spread?
Use it for complicated situations with a lot of moving parts: a major decision, a relationship at a crossroads, a career change. For a quick check-in, a one or three card reading is easier to digest.
Which card in the Celtic Cross matters most?
Start with the first two: the present and the challenge crossing it. Together they're the heart of the reading. The outcome card matters too, but it only makes sense in light of the rest.
