How the three-card spread works
Think of a situation (a relationship, a job, a decision you keep circling) and pick three cards. They're laid out as a timeline, and the magic is in reading them together.
What each position means
- Past. The root of it. Old patterns, recent events or decisions that set this in motion.
- Present. The energy around you right now, and usually the card with the most practical advice.
- Future. Where things are trending if you keep going the way you're going. A forecast, not a sentence.
Reading the story
Look at how the cards flow. A painful past card followed by a calmer present card says you're already healing. A great present card followed by a rough future card is a heads-up, not a curse: something about the current approach needs adjusting. If two or more cards share a suit, that suit's theme (feelings for Cups, thoughts for Swords, money and work for Pentacles, drive and passion for Wands) is the real subject of your reading.
Each card links to its full meaning so you can dig into anything that surprises you.
Past, Present, Future Tarot FAQ
What is the past, present, future tarot spread?
It's the most popular three-card spread. The first card shows what led to the situation, the second shows where things stand now, and the third shows the direction it's heading if nothing changes.
Is the future card set in stone?
No. The future card shows the likely outcome based on the current path. If you don't like it, look at the present card: that's where you have the most power to change things.
Can I use other positions for a three card spread?
Yes. Situation, action, outcome and mind, body, spirit are popular alternatives. This page uses past, present, future because it's the easiest way to see a story unfold.
