The 6th House represents work, daily routine and health. It’s not a house people associate with romance. But if your relationship planets (the Moon, Venus, Mars or ruler of your 7th House) are in the 6th, its themes will impact your love life. Understanding how this house functions can mean the difference between healthy, or unequal, partnerships.
It’s helpful to understand what this area of your chart is all about. The 6th is the house of inequality. It represents work, but it’s the work you do for others (in traditional astrology, it’s the house of servants). Its energy is about submission, duty, and obligation. Ego has a tough time expressing itself here. But this house is also where you perfect your skills and attend to the details that help your life run smoothly. Its natural ruler is Virgo. If you have relationship planets in this house, there’s a part of you (depending on the planet) that will approach relationships as work. You may also subordinate yourself to your partner. Let’s look at some examples.

Hi Nadia, what do you think of 6th romantic synastry? All my serious relationships have been with Pisceans, and Pisces is intercepted in my 6th house (Aquarius is on the 6th house cusp, Aries on the 7th). My ex-husband also had Venus and Mars in Pisces. I guess these relationships felt somewhat routine, mundane to me, lacked excitement and definitely felt like work. the only one that didn’t was the one I didn’t live with, so I’m wondering if I’m just projecting qualities i think I might ascribe to this placement rather than what is. In all the synastary cookbooks it says planets in the 6th house in romantic connections are not pretty unsexy and undesirable.
@Dana,
When your partner’s planets fall in your 6th House, you might see them as “useful”, but generally this is not a hot ‘n sexy placement. You’re not projecting.
Mind you, it all depends on the rest of the connections as well. But they (the planet person) would activate your energies of duties/dutifulness. Not to say this is always a poor crossover for a relationship; sometimes people need a partner who helps them function on a daily basis.
Great article Nadia…I’d never thought of this before. My husband has his Pisces Venus in his 6th house. How do you think that kind of opposition (not sure of the proper term) could manifest? Thanks, Julie
Hello Nadia, I have Saturn, Sun, Venus, MercuryRx, Jupiter, and Ketu in my 6th house (Aquarius); Moon in Sc, MA in Cap; Feels like my love life had been blocked completely and all I do is work and work. Is this my lot in life?
Hi Nadia.
I have a Moon Mars conjunction In Aquarius, just before my desc. In the 6th. I also have have my 7th Ruler Uranus in 6th House Capricorn (As well as Neptune, ruler of my solar 8th)..
Oh and I have a Saturn Venus conjunct in the 7th, which seems very much tied up.
What do you make of this? I’d love to hear your opinion!
Thanks, Josh
Hi Nadia
I have my Moon in 6th house; it is in Pisces. (im Gem, Lib Rising)
I used to stay too long in bad relationships; trying to save folks.
Since i learned to stop that, im alone.
Can you shed any light?
I have my sixth house ruler in the third house. My south node is also in the sixth house – the last thing I should be doing in this life is writing for other people, which was what I used to do.
@Julie
Venus in Pisces in the 6th would still result in an attitude of service to loved ones, but it might be less practical more “higher calling”. Service to the point of sacrifice.
@Maya S
I can’t say if this is your lot in life without seeing your entire chart. It is more comfortable for you to lose yourself in work, especially with your South Node (Ketu) in the 6th. Your path forward would be your 12th house…stepping beyond what you can see right in front of you. You always have a choice…your chart does not dictate your life.
@Josh
Moon/Mars in the 6th (in Aquarius) is the need to work at something, but to do it your way. Doing something for someone is an expression of your individuality (“Look at me, here’s how I do _____”). Uranus in Capricorn can make you ambitious about your relationships (work to make them happen) but it can also cause you to isolate yourself from relationships (via your work/duties). 7th House Venus/Saturn does tie into this (Saturn rules Capricorn)….one again, a theme of isolation/boundaries around love/creating a relationship with substance (love equals work).
@Cassidy,
It’s good that you stopped that (sacrificing your needs….Moon) but I’m afraid I can’t offer more insight without seeing your entire chart. Moon in 6th House Pisces does need to give to a higher cause, so maybe pointing that energy in another direction might open things up.
Hi Nadia,
I have my venus in capricorn in the 6th house and my mercury in aquarius in the 6th house. I also have Capricorn placed in the sixth house. What can you say me about that?
Thank you
@Caroline,
Specific rules about what you’ll do for love (or a loved one). Finding your self-esteem through structured service (not just sacrificing everything for someone). Mercury in Aquarius would make your thought patterns (regarding service, order) very difficult to change (Aquarius is a fixed sign). Maybe some OCD going on here.
In my experience, Pluto-the ruler of the 7th house in 6th house of Virgo, in all my relationships with coworkers en intimate partners, is i had to learn to understand people needs and to be insightful and organized. I became very good in everything, i have set my mind to. I also have learned to spend my energy sufficiently, sometimes i gave too much, so also learned to understand my own deep needs as well.
I have spend some time learning vedic astrology. They teach that the sagnificator of a good marriage is a strong 6th house in synastry, when planets come in partners 6th house, or in composite chart. In my case it is true. Many partner’s planets are in my 6th house and vicee versa. I do not experience us as boring couple, neither is he.
Hi Nadia,
Few questions to You:
- BAD Lilith is in my sixth house 18′ Libra (squaring my natal sun in Cap 9th house and trine my ASC in Gem)?
- LOVE asteroids Cupido, Psyche, Eros, Anteros, Adonis, Lust, Isis, Osiris, Astraea, Casanova, Lovejoy, Ask – all in my 6th house – your comments, please!
- My Vertex is also in 6th house, 26′ in Libra – how bad is that ??
Also, my Neptune is 15′ Sco and Venus 1′ Saq – both in sixth house madness, see – my 6th house is huge, from 1 Libra to 17′ Saq.
Thanks for reply;)
@Hannes;
I don’t consider Lilith to be “bad”; she represents untamed female energy/anger. Square your Sun (from your 6th House) suggests you may feel resentful when you need to do something for a lover.
Asteroids; sorry, I haven’t worked with the ones you’ve listed. I work with Ceres, Vesta, Pallas and Juno.
I’m not sure why you would consider a 6th House Vertex to be bad…it suggests a significant (fated) turning point for you (when activated by transits or synastry) involving service/work.
Since your 6th House is so emphasized, I would look at how you feel about doing things for others. Venus in Sag especially likes her freedom, but she might feel restricted in the 6th.
Hi Nadia,
so does my Vertex 26′ Libra on 6th mean that I must serve people through art and beauty ( I’m actually in music), this is OK for me – and my Neptune in Sco is also on 6th house, adding this vibe!
Also, My Vertex is trined to my chart ruler Moon on 1st house 28′ Gem, this is also quite good and I like it very much! But what are the minus points regarding to relationships with my Vertex – because I’m on stage, etc. and time by time attracted by women- which don’t get long at the end (meaning some bitter endings all the time). Is it my Venus 1′ in Saq in 6th house restricting the relationships between women regarding this? How to overcome this and to what to be careful?
Regarding asteroids with You are working, some comments would be very helpful, please – my Pallas is in 2th house 12′ Cancer and Ceres 17′, Juno 26′ and Vesta 28′ are all in Virgo in 5th house.
Thanks for reply;)
@Hannes,
I’m fine with posting a few observations about people’s charts in this comments section (which I’ve done for your chart) but for anything more than that you’d need to order a consultation.
Thanks.
