This post is a follow-up to Moon-Mars Aspects in Synastry: Sex and Psyche
Though we’re dealing with a masculine and a feminine planet with Moon/Mars, it is a less sexually divided pairing than Venus/Mars. All of us have emotions, memories and conscious awareness (Moon), and all of us, male or female, express our sexuality through Mars. However, issues come up when one or the other party isn’t fully attuned to planetary energy.
If a man isn’t in touch with this emotional side, or a woman is out of step with the more aggressive parts of her nature, then the Moon/Mars pairing can get uncomfortable.
Woman’s Moon and Man’s Mars: When a woman’s Moon is involved with a Man’s Mars, he’s stimulated by her basic femininity. On the whole, women are in touch with their lunar side and express it unconsciously, unless there has been damage in childhood.
Unlike Venus’s aspects with Mars, which can be about give and take and the game of seduction, Moon/Mars contacts require no effort to attract. One of the most seductive things about this combination is that it seems organic, and natural.
Unless there is a lot of conflicts, the physical expression of this pairing is effortless. He seems to know just what to do, and she knows just how to respond. He will stimulate whatever nurturing responses she has, and if he’s the kind that seeks to nurture, he’s in the right place. He will spur her to a more complete expression of herself as a woman.
Man’s Moon and Woman’s Mars: This combination depends a great deal on how comfortable a man is with his own emotional responses. With this Moon/Mars combination, the psychological aspect of sex is never far away, and can’t be compartmentalized the way Venus/Mars can.
When the female Mars stimulates the man’s Moon, he will feel it all the way down to the depths – both body and soul – and if he isn’t used to going that far, he may want to run and hide. If a woman is unconscious of her Mars power – or testing it (which will most likely happen when she is younger) – she may sense his vulnerability and become prodding and manipulative.
If she uses her power in a positive way, he will learn that it’s okay to play the passive role sometimes, with all the trust issues that arise. If he has Moon/Mars issues himself about fulfilling his needs, or if Mother was an aggressive figure, old wounds may rear their ugly heads.
This combination works best if the synastry has other aspects that indicate empathy and compassion because this contact is likely to take the man into territory that’s unfamiliar (and perhaps a little scary) to him. On the upside, it will stimulate his caring side and can open him up to a new emotional landscape.

The Conjunction: We have a false idea of conjunctions as the ultimate in compatibility, but the truth is that the conjunction can sometimes be erratic and unstable, taking the planets to extremes. The Moon/Mars conjunction between charts will be an adventure into new emotional and sexual territory for both parties, as intense needs and intense desire combine, merge and conflict.
The best way to handle the conjunction is to try and take in some of the qualities of the sign opposite the conjunction as a guide to how to handle it in a mature fashion. It can be a smooth ride or it can be a rollercoaster, depending on the aspects and elements.
Earth and water may be calmer, whereas fire and air conjunctions may be more volatile.
The Opposition: When the Moon opposes Mars in a chart, evolution is a priority. Oppositions in synastry are great gifts if we look at them from a proper perspective; one person’s planet embodies what the other needs in order to grow.
When the Moon and Mars are opposed in synastry, it may seem, at first, that the two are at odds, and initially, they may be uncomfortable with one another. In particular, the Moon may find Mars irritating, always pulling the Moon past its comfort zones. Mars may find the Moon complacent and overly emotional, always drawing him back to safety just when he wants to let loose.
Eventually, both will realize that they are just what they need for one another. Mars stimulates the Moon’s awareness, and the Moon wakes Mars up to its internal motivations. Once this is understood, the sexual tension between the two may be uneven, but when it’s hot, it’s hot.
The Trine: Moon trine Mars in a synastry can be poetry in motion. Both parties have a natural understanding and appreciation of one another. Mars is grateful for the Moon’s warmth and insight; the Moon finds in Mars a champion and an ardent lover.
They can work together well on anything they set their minds to, but particularly with anything to do with home, family, children, or security goals. Sexually, they are nearly always in tune, and stimulate one another in a gentle but constant way.
Over time, the danger is that they take one another for granted. The Moon needs to throw something new into the mix once in a while, while Mars has to keep abreast of the Moon’s evolving needs and feelings.
The Square: Squares between the Moon and Mars can be an emotional battleground or an exciting romp into the new psycho-sexual territory. Sometimes Moon and Mars seem completely at odds, with the Moon unable to relate at all to the ways Mars behaves, and Mars feeling that the Moon is from another tribe entirely. But the truth is that they fascinate one another, in spite of their differences.
Moon has to be aware of its tendency to cling to its defences, and Mars has to realize that, to the Moon, he can be a bit of a clod sometimes. These two can find common ground when they realize that they stimulate one another to action; they can use some of that sexual tension to accomplish something outside the bedroom.
The Sextile: Moon and Mars are probably in their friendliest place here. The Gemini quality inherent in a sextile gives the planets a bit of space to catch their breath from all the feelings and intensity. There is an inbuilt ease in sextiles that allows for lots of communication between the two planets, without the danger of irritation (or explosion) in the other aspects.
Sextiles are generally helpful and stimulating, without the complacency that’s inherent in the trine. Sexually, these two are always aware of what’s going on with the other; the sign differences between the planets keep things interesting.
The Quincunx: Quincunxes between charts are unpredictable. The tension here can bounce from intense to total neglect – all within the course of a day, or an hour. A lot depends on other aspects to the Moon and Mars. If either is unpredictable (touched by an outer planet, perhaps), then this attraction/repulsion energy will be difficult to live with.
They may want one another one minute, and then one or the other – or both – lose interest the next. Like all Moon/Mars contacts, this one is sexually stimulating, but a couple will need some other indicators of sexual compatibility to anchor the quincunx. If there are other indicators for compatibility, these two will continually surprise one another in the bedroom.
