Nodal/House Overlays in Synastry: Activating the Karmic Path

In synastry, contacts to the natal South Node indicate each person’s involvement in the other’s past. Contacts to the North Node describe the role they can play in the future.

This is usually analyzed in the context of person A’s planet aspecting person B’s Node.

However, Nodal overlays to the houses are not discussed as often. These overlays are significant, but only under certain conditions.

The natal South Node represents past life and comfortable (but limiting) habits in this life. Too much emphasis on the South Node can result in stagnation. This is where the North Node comes in; it marks the path a person can take to evolve beyond their South Node and reach their full potential.

Impact of someone’s nodes on your house

The Nodes function differently than planets. They are markers along the path that stretches from a person’s past to their future. They are not planetary energy. If your partner’s South Node falls in your 7th House, it won’t activate that house, and you may feel nothing.

However, there are circumstances where you will feel the impact of someone’s Nodes in your houses:

if their Nodes conjunct or square one of your natal planets
if their Nodes conjunct your angles (the cusps of your 1st, 7th, 4th or 10th Houses)

When someone’s North or South Node is activated by your planets or angles, the Node person’s experience of their past and/or future will be directly tied to you. You’ll feel this in the context of the house (in your chart) that their Node falls in.

Let’s look at some examples, keeping in mind that we’ll be approaching this primarily from the perspective of the house person. Also, when dealing with aspects between the Nodes and planets/angles, I use tight orbs (4-5 degrees maximum).

Person B’s North or South Node Aspecting Person A’s 10th House Sun in Aquarius

This is not, in and of itself, a romantic contact. But a romantic relationship is assumed (due to other synastry aspects). Your Sun (ego and life’s purpose) is in your 10th House of career and future goals. You’re ambitious and focused on making your mark in your unique way (Aquarius). Your partner’s North Node conjuncts your Sun.

The way you handle your career will be inspiring and/or discomforting for them, since it will push them out of their comfort zone. How they respond to this evolutionary prompt will describe the impact they have on your 10th House.

You have the potential to be their guide, as you independently carve out your future. When you sense that they’re looking to you for answers, it may boost your ego (Sun).

It could also inspire you to make innovative leaps, because your partner’s future (North Node) is tied to your future (10th House).

But if they are not ready to work with their North Node, they may criticize your career choices, or the emphasis you put on work. If your partner is stuck in the subjective rut of their Leo South Node, they may start to complain that you spend more time checking your business email than talking to them.

You find their demands are a burden that distracts you from your goals. If they continue to resist their North Node path, you may feel that they’re holding you back.

Let’s flip it around

If we flip things around, and put your partner’s South Node close to your 10th House Sun, the interface is (initially) more comfortable. There’s an instant familiarity between the two of you, since a Sun/South Node connection indicates past life involvement.

In this life, the two of you may meet at your workplace. You become romantically involved, and the South Node person fully supports your career ambitions because it feels natural for them. Love and business combine beautifully.

Depending on how the South Node person handles their evolution (moving towards their North Node) it may disrupt your future plans. Their North Node path probably involves a move away from the scenario where the two of you first met.

They decide to quit their job for something that supports their creative self-expression (North Node in Leo). This can leave you feeling out of the loop, and you wonder if your partner’s future and your future are on the same path. They may, or may not be (depending on the rest of your synastry connections).

Let’s say your 10th House Aquarius Sun squares your partner’s Nodal axis (their Taurus North Node lies in your 2nd House, and their Scorpio South Node lies in your 8th House).

As discussed in a previous article, when planets in synastry square the Nodes, the planet person is a skipped step (unfinished business) for the Node person.

Perhaps in a past life you shook your partner up, refusing to be controlled by their Scorpio South Node jealousy. In in this life, they see your career ambitions as something that takes you away from them. Since their obsessive South Node is in your 8th House of intimacy and shared resources, this could manifest as the Node person trying to “own” you, sexually and financially.

They need to move towards their Taurus North Node, which involves dialing it down from Scorpio paranoia to Taurus contentment.

In your 2nd House (of personal resources) this could translate to your partner becoming more comfortable with your financial and emotional independence. To help them along, you can be aware that exercising your independence threatens them. So just keep doing it (with sensitivity, of course).

That’s a bump they have to get over.

Person B’s North and South Nodes Conjunct Person A’s 1st/7th House Axis

Let’s say you have Virgo rising, and you meet someone whose South Node conjuncts your Virgo Ascendent. There’s an immediate sense of belonging, because the Node person’s habitual behavior (the helpful, hard-working worrier) blends with your external Virgo persona and identity.

You can just be yourself with them because they instinctively “get” you. As profound as this may feel, it’s no guarantee of a romantic relationship (even with the past-life connection, which may or may not have been romantic).

You are drawn to the Node person, but you’ve got dreamy Pisces on your 7th House cusp, so you want a partner who personifies that transcendent energy.

If the Node person has not been working with their Pisces North Node (which conjuncts your 7th House cusp), they may become a close friend but not a romantic partner.

Maybe the Node person has done their evolutionary work and stepped outside their comfort zone. Assuming other synastry contacts between you indicate attraction, this can turn into a powerful relationship.

The Node person’s evolutionary path aligns with what you’ve been looking for in a partner. The more they evolve, the stronger the partnership becomes.

If we put their South Node on your Pisces 7th House cusp, the probability of a past life romance is stronger. The Node person is already comfortable with dreams and romance, and this is the magic you’ve been looking for in a relationship.

Depending on how they live their South Node, they could bring idealism into your love life or be victims who need saving. Either way, their Pisces habits and your attraction to them will be a potent draw.

Since their Virgo North Node sits on your 1st House cusp, they may respond to your external persona with irritation and discomfort. By being “you,” you’re a reminder of what the Node person could grow into.

They may resent this and end up resenting you. This can make you question if there’s something wrong with who you are.

On the other hand

On the other hand, they may follow your lead and your grounded, practical way of approaching the world. This can be incredibly validating for you. And although it does not always have to be case, there’s a chance that the Node person may eventually feel that a relationship with you holds them back.

As binding as South Node contacts can be, if the South Node person is ready to move forward, certain things must be left behind.

When looking at Nodal/house overlays in synastry, remember that the Nodes (by themselves) do not activate a house. The Nodes represent a person’s experience of their past and future — their karmic path.

When that path crosses through the houses in your chart, you’ll feel the impact if one of your planets or angles make a hard aspect to it.
