Introducing All-Access Membership

March 12, 2013 by Jeffrey Kishner 3 Comments

The digital landscape is changing — advertising dollars alone are not adequate to support the production of many websites. Sasstrology has been offering articles on the astrology of sex and relationships by excellent writers since 2006, and as of this writing we have over 500 articles in this category alone, not to mention every possible zodiac sign combination of Venus-Mars compatibility (and we’re more than 1/3 through the Sun-Moon series).

To reach our goal of offering more high-quality astrology articles — and to eventually wean ourselves off of advertising — Sasstrology is going to limit access to our archives. What this means:

  • All forecasts and horoscopes (daily, weekly, monthly, annual) will always be free.
  • Any article that is over 30 days old may only have its first few paragraphs available to the public. To read the rest of these articles, you’ll have to purchase an All-Access Membership for a one-time fee of $12.

In essence, just about any article that’s promoted on the home page will be completely viewable to the public, but if you dip into older articles, you’ll have to become a paying member to have full access. The vast majority of these articles are what publishers call “evergreen” — timeless, valuable reference sources for readers who want to deepen their knowledge of astrology.

If you are a casual visitor who only reads the latest content, you’ll never even hit a paywall, but if you find value in what Sasstrology has offered, we hope that you will support us.

There is no one button to turn on to limit access to our vast collection, so we will start with the most popular articles first. The less-trafficked posts will be fully-viewable for a greater length of time than the popular posts, and we are not going to be rigid about putting absolutely all evergreen content behind the paywall. Frankly, we hope to reach a balance in which we can attract enough paying members to meet our goals while still having valuable posts in our archives fully available to everyone — we still want to reach as many readers as possible!

Well I’m down for no ads!

I was just rereading older articles in the last couple weeks too so I’ve just purchased!

But Jeffrey, are you sure a one-time fee will be enough? I didn’t think I could afford to do the monthly donations anymore as it was over $100 a year but I would be happy to do a $10 yearly subscription. You can’t really go from a one-time fee to a yearly though. The best of luck tho because I love this site! 🙂

My reasoning for a one-time fee: if someone devours the archives in one year and she can keep up with the new content within 30 days of publication, is there much incentive to pay annually? Also, the ecommerce aspect is simpler without recurring subscriptions.
