Mars Retrograde in Virgo: How It Will Affect Your Zodiac Sign

Mars Retrograde is a time to "re" some areas of your life.

It’s possible that you’ll spend the entire time period of the Mars retrograde (January 23-April 13) doing absolutely nothing, lazily glued to your couch in full-on potato mode. It’s possible, but highly unlikely, since even in retrograde motion, Mars is a force to be reckoned with. As the energizer bunny of the zodiac, Mars is the resident expert of movement and action. Retrograde, Mars is muted, toned down and internalized, yes, but the life force power of Mars is still very much alive, and as such, needs to be tended to.

While Mars is retrograde for nearly three months it will demand attention, directing awareness towards the Martian sphere of life. Since Mars will be spending all of its retrograde movement travelling through the sign of Virgo, it will behoove us all to pay more attention to the subtle details of life. The simple daily patterns that you usually take for granted, such as dental care, dog walking and bill-paying—to name a few—may take on a greater significance during this time.

You’ll be asked to “re” the area of your chart that Mars in Virgo touches. Re-assessing, re-negotiating, re-vising, re-aligning, you name it, you can “re” it. Virgo will demand attention to the details, to organization and a more service-oriented approach to life. Cultivating simplicity in how you approach issues that arise will help you navigate this Mars movement with greater ease. You’ll know you’re out of balance if you find yourself overwhelmed with anxiety, sick or stuck in patterns of nagging and criticism of yourself or everyone else. In cases such as these, pull that emergency lever called “breathing” and resolve to breathe yourself back to something approaching sanity. Virgo thrives in the smaller moments of life, so maximize your appreciation of these and you’ll enjoy this planetary weather more than most.

You’ll do well to focus on re-doing your health and wellness routines, simplifying, improving and just doing an all-around “virgofication” of this basic, but oh-so-important area of life.

Oh lucky you! With Mars going retro in your house of fun, romance and creativity, it’s time to re-assess your playtime. What could be better than getting a three month laser beam directed at your house of pleasure? Clear out the clutter of old modes of fun and get clear on what really turns you on.

It’s home on the range for you Gemini, as Mars turns backwards in your 4th house of home and family. Time to clean your house, literally and otherwise. If books, papers and electronic devices are making it hard for you to take in any new information, then now’s your chance to make a clean sweep.

If you find yourself a bit more crabby and critical than usual, just blame it on Mars retrograding through your house of communication. Of course you can learn from this transit and work on streamlining all your connections with others. Community service is also a great way to direct some of that service-oriented Virgo energy during this time.

Ooh! Fun, fun, fun for you Leo, as you’ll get to fine-tune your finances during this Mars retrograde. Time to set a budget, do your taxes and get all matters related to money in tip-top shape. You’ll also get benefit from honestly assessing your skills and talents, getting clear on what you’ve got to offer the world.

Mars is focusing on you with a special emphasis as it spends an extra long time in your sign this year. You’ll have ample opportunities to render yourself nearly perfect as you re-vision, re-make and re-new your approach to life. Remember not to over-do things, otherwise you could get tangled up in your own web.

Rest and retreat are often done best in a spa environment—and if you can swing it, this would be your ideal way to spend this retrograde period. Failing that, try to “spa-ify” your life, integrating as many opportunities to relax and rejuvenate into your daily routines as you can.

Hmm… groups and community are going to demand your energy now, are you ready? Though you like to keep things on the down-low, safely hidden from plain sight, you may need to do a bit of excavating now in order to clean and refresh the area of your life that concerns your friendships.

You’ll be asked to pay attention to the nitty-gritty of your career and public reputation. If you’ve been painting broad brushstrokes as you tend to do—focusing on the big picture but neglecting all the pesky details—now’s the time to pay the piper. File those expense reports, get your bookkeeping done and perform some public services … your reputation will benefit in the long run.

Time to get clear on what you really believe in. You’ll feel some pressure to put your sacred cows under the microscope now and examine whether you really practice what you preach. A trip to foreign climes could help you focus this process, especially if there’s a volunteer/service aspect involved.

If you’ve ever felt called to sit on the couch (a la Freud), now’s the time. A little therapeutic processing will do you good, helping you understand just what kind of Aquarian “crazies” you’ve got. Obsessions, phobias and other strange and unusual behaviors may take on a new light under this transit.

Time to take a good long look in the mirror of your “other” as Mars passes through your 7th house of partnership. Relationships of all kinds are under the most Virgo of scrutinies now, and it won’t do you any good to put your head in the sand. You’ll have the potential to re-vamp and re-new relationships that aren’t passing muster, so look forward to a bright and shiny new love life once this transit has passed.

  1. Would it be helpful to also read the sign that is your chart ruler?

  2. Insofar as that Mars may conjoin your chart ruler. But really… these are horoscopes, and in my opinion they are most accurate when look at your Ascendant.

  3. @Jeffrey Kishner

I am a Scorpio with Aries Rising with a Mars in Virgo. So, I figured Mars may be important to interpret here.

  4. You’d be more sensitive to Mars’ transits since He’s your Sun and chart ruler. Plus (I don’t know what degree your Mars is in) you may be having multiple Mars-Mars conjunctions (Returns). In that sense, yes, read the ‘scope for Virgo.

  5. @Jeffrey Kishner

Thanks for that insight. My Mars is 12 degrees Virgo. Multiple Mars-Mars conjunction??? Does that mean neurosis overload. I have a stellium in the 6th house which is ruled by Virgo. I am aiming for a Zen year! So, I don’t know what a multiple Mars-Mars conjunction has planned. Lol.

  6. This Mars-conjunct-Mars transit started in December and will end in May for you. You have a lot of “re” to do, as Fern mentions above.

  7. Thanks! Already underway!

  8. Kim Oliver says:

My Mars is in Taurus in the 10th house. How will the Mars retrograde affect me. My sun sign is Capricorn.

  9. Retro natal Mars in Taurus that trines my Asc in Virgo & sextile moon in Pisces. Chart ruler is ?ercury in Scorpio. Mars is in the 9th opposite ?ercury in the 3rd, Asc opposes 7th house moon. I wonder how this is going to play out.

  10. @kmlvr9 if your rising sign is Leo, I suggest you read that horoscope

  11. Funny…I’ve been doing just that (what is suggested for Taurus Rising) and I feel that playing outside of the bullseye of the pleasure zone is a waste of time. I feel like a change is coming either to my personal love style or that my preferences are narrowing down (becoming more defined/exact), but not in the traditional sense. I’m more open to being with someone who is very personally and intimately compatible with me than my household over all per se. I’m also trimming away the fat in my friendships by speaking up on things that I’d rather not prefer. Usually, I’m kinda quiet about those things, but I find myself being extremely vocal in regards to my inner friendship circle. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not kicking any friends to the curb, but definitely kinda rearranging how I spend my time with them according to the enlightenment taking place within.
