A Saturn kind of love starts with commitment and is built upon a foundation of common interests and needs rather than soulful looks and candlelit dinners for two. In the film Sarah, Plain and Tall, Sarah travels from New England to the Midwest to marry a widowed farmer with two children. It is the story of learning to love someone over time. Sarah (Glenn Glose) was a spinster who answers an ad placed in a newspaper by Jacob (Christopher Walken), who is looking for a new wife to look after his children and take care of their home. Since this is just a story, the two people come to love each other after undergoing many trials and tribulations, and all ends well.
If you think this story has no relevance to today, think about all those folks who meet online in various and sundry matchmaking sites and end up arranging to meet in real life. The key is being as honest and open as is humanly possible with yourself and your potential partner … no rose-colored glasses allowed! Another thing to keep in mind is one of Saturn in Libra’s favorite solutions, and that is compromise.
With Saturn, there is always the danger of rigidity and behaving in a cold, authoritarian manner—a manner which is often used to disguise underlying feelings of insecurity and fear of rejection. As a means of sabotaging budding relationships, both tactics are quite effective. Moving past our fears and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable opens the door to unconditional love, Saturn-style.
Saturn does encourage us to learn to accept ourselves warts and all, but it does take effort to get there. The beauty of learning to accept ourselves with unflinching honesty and an open heart is that we become far, far better potential partners. No doubt this is part of why Saturn is exalted in Libra.
When we grow to deeply love first ourselves and then another under Saturn’s tutelage, it is often after our first Saturn Return, when hopefully we have gained a measure of maturity. Please bear in mind the old adage, “the stars incline, not compel,” and that we always have free will to choose to either pass on Saturn’s lessons or learn from them.
For now, we can contemplate the possibility that there is another path to love, strewn with boulders but ultimately rewarding. So set aside the Twilight series and watch Sarah, Plain and Tall instead, and entertain the idea of living for love instead of dying for it. Hey, Saturn will be in Libra until October 2012, so we have time (also a Saturn thing)!

great article 🙂 any thoughts on what will happen when saturn moves into scorpio?
Saturn moving into Scorpio?! Hmmmmmmm. Looking back to the last time Saturn was in Scorpio (1983-1985~) when STDs/AIDs forced uncomfortable conversations between would be lovers, we may be getting a refresher course in being honest about our sexual history. The deep bonding and intimacy Scorpio so loves requires an openness and self-acceptance that comes with time and maturity (Saturn).
Tough to do . . . 🙂

I like the comparison of modern online dating to the era of Sarah, Plain and Tall – never really thought about it that way.
Saturn brings up the reality that usually the biggest obstacle to being happy and achieving what we desire is ourselves. If people just enter situations and cycles with an open mind and try to derive the positives from the situation (like the presence of Saturn), good can come from anything!
Good post, and great parallel!

Alyssa…I agree. I’ve never before been so open minded about who would make a great potential partner and to say the least, I have come across some interesting, fascinating, and alternatively intellectual men. lol Alternatively intellectual = non-traditional intellect
What I thought about last night is how much I’ve grown this year. Part of it is due to ALOT of time spent introspectively, but also due to my interactions with people that I wouldn’t have entertained had I not opened my mind to experiencing something other than what I used to think of as the status quo.
I met him during the Saturn in Libra transit.
So i guess it takes more effort but the pay-off is great?
IMO as long as Saturn in Libra’s rules are respected, gemster, he will support the relationship. Besides, treating others with honesty, respect and appreciation is always a good idea along with staying open to compromise . . . 🙂

I actually have Saturn in Libra transiting my 5th house of love. Any ideas on how this is impacting my love-life? I understand what you wrote but I’ve been having a hard time find someone suitable. I wonder if I have been doing the following;
‘ With Saturn, there is always the danger of rigidity and behaving in a cold, authoritarian manner—a manner which is often used to disguise underlying feelings of insecurity and fear of rejection. As a means of sabotaging budding relationships, both tactics are quite effective.’
Thank you Diane for your answer.
Yes, honesty, respect, appreciation and compromise were absolutely involved when we had a romantic rendez-vous in July.
But from his side: rigidity, cold, authoritarian manner, insecurity and fear of rejection came into play in October. I haven’t heard from him since.
Patience is key?
I think I am falling in love with a Cap – isn’t their ruling planet Saturn? New to this.
It all makes so much sense now after reading this article.
Thx ever so much Ms Lang (Neith).
That makes sense. I haven’t fallen in love per se, but I have come upon men that I’d never thought I’d be interested in. Sad to say, these men are already taken, but they’ve helped me to move on from a past relationship and rethink my long term goals (in love).
@AC & La Quishia
Sounds like both of you are beginning to develop new ideas about the type of man you want in your lives. Someone more mature and willing to commit is consistent with Saturn in Libra. That doesn’t necessarily mean boring either . . . 🙂
Good luck!
