Have you dated or found yourself inexplicably attracted to your opposite sign? The attraction is immediate and feels full of promise. But it fails to deliver in the long run, and I’ll show you why.
The average person does not blink before he decides to enter a relationship. He does so not from careful deliberation but from unconscious instinctual attraction. A connection with his opposite sign feels like a true match, because the two signs are actually part of the same axis, but in opposing poles. So in essence, he enters a relationship with someone of the opposite sign with the illusion that they are one and the same.
Humans do not seek a partner with traits they lack, but rather one who complements them. So, from a surface glance, your opposite sign fits the bill perfectly. But what one does not know is that this is the illusion of compatibility, and not true compatibility in itself. Why is it only an illusion? Let us explore the reasons.
Opposites approach the same situation differently. Let’s take a look at Aries and Libra. Aries is signified by Mars, God of War; Libra by Venus, Goddess of Peace. How can War and Peace reconcile? They are not only at odds with each other, they mutually exclude each other. They attract because they are connected by an intrinsic axis of cardinality. They see things pretty much the same way – but their actions oppose each other. While Libra prefers to stand back and weigh the options, Aries prefers to charge right in and think later. These opposing ways of doing things trip each other up. In a relationship, Aries would hurry Libra and upset his rhythm. Libra would hold Aries back and make her less of who she is. Unconsciously, each is telling the other that their own approach is right, thus taking much away from the other’s nature of expression.
True, Aries teaches Libra individuality. But in a relationship with Libra, Aries shows that to Libra by putting herself first above all – no compromise (which is Libra’s ideal). Due to their opposite natures, Aries and Libra are not allowed to express their essential selves, but are rather forced to perpetually express the shadow side of themselves. In the long run, they would find this sacrifice deeply unsettling to their psyches.
However, all this would only be apparent after the first blush of romance is over, because each would trip themselves up trying to suppress themselves to fit into the relationship. When the true Aries anger comes up, and the indecisive Libran nature reels its head, this one is a duck and go. If they decide to continue with this, immense tolerance is necessary. Libra will sulk and feel immensely irritated with how Aries goes about doing things (which is opposite to his own), while Aries will be hurt by Libra’s coldness and will be driven to helpless rage with Libra’s indecision and withdrawal.
If you picture the peaceful scales trying to balance itself, then place an implacable ram trying to wreak havoc, causing the scales to tumble violently, eventually catapulting the ram off it and into greener pastures. The scales can then silently swing until they reach equilibrium in peace, while the ram happily grazes where the grass is green.
