Men’s Moon Signs, Part 2: Cancer, Leo, and Virgo

Listen to this article

About this series by famed astrologer, Donna Cunningham: Astrologers feel that the Moon in a man’s chart shows what his mother was like and therefore, the type of woman he feels most at home with. Many years ago, the famed psychologist, Carl Jung did a research study to determine the glue that held marriages together. A devotee of astrology, he looked at the charts of hundreds of couples who stayed together for the long haul and were compatible. He found that when the Moon sign of one of them was the same sign as the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant of the other, they were most likely to stay together because they could live together with more comfort. In this 4-part series, we’ll be looking at men’s Moon signs and, to give you a sense of what they’re like, some examples of famous men with those Moons.

moonface-planet-galleryMoon in Cancer: With the Moon in the Moon’s own sign, Cancer, these are the real lunar types, the ones who are bound to run into problems with machismo because they are sensitive, emotional, and attached to home and family. The lunar qualities are too strong and immediate to ignore, so such a man may develop a tough shell to maintain his cool. He is also likely to marry a real earth mother who’ll meet his needs automatically without him having to ask.

His own mother may have been a smotherer, and he’s often still tied to her symbiotically. If he has to hide his feelings, he can seek relief by eating or drinking too much or remaining overly dependent on his family. Stomach problems or emotional explosions can also result from repression. If he’s liberated from the masculine stereotype, the Cancerian can be wonderfully tender, able to give and receive nurturing. He can also be warmly protective and responsive to your feelings and his own.

Men with Cancer Moons: Tim Allen, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Busfield, David Hasselhoff, Willie Nelson, Keanu Reeves, Kurt Russell, Yanni, Yo Yo Ma, and Dweezil Zappa.

Moon in Leo: The Leo Moon may actually be quite dependent, but puts on a show of confidence and fearlessness, with a certain sort of smug machismo. He’s too proud to show his needs or confess his insecurities. He may cover up by roaring and striking out as fiercely as the lion which symbolizes his sign. Leo expects to rule, so when his dominance is questioned, he may become angry. Still, he genuinely enjoys women and can make you feel like a princess. The role of queen is reserved for his mom, who could be quite the Queen Bee and thus a bit much to deal with as a mother-in-law.

His home is his castle and he likes the décor to reflect that. He is luxury-loving and wants meals fit for a king. You, as Queen Consort, must preside at his functions as perfectly as the Queen Mother herself did when he was growing up. Leo Moons, on the positive side, are sunny rather than brooding, so the general emotional tone is warm and fun-loving.

Men with Leo Moons: The older generation with Moon in Leo include Tom Selleck and Kris Kristofferson. Others with this Moon sign are Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Chad Lowe, and the late Patrick Swayze.

Moon in Virgo: He may well have had a mother who was intolerant of his dependency and yet convinced him he was incompetent to make it without her. As an adult, he continuously questions his worth and competency. He has to prove it compulsively to himself, to the women in his life, and to the world at large. He may become a workaholic, critical of himself for having any needs at all.

He only allows himself to “slack off” under one circumstance. That’s when he gets sick, which he can do fairly frequently as the years roll on, unless he learns to accept and meet his own needs. His dependency can come out in being demanding on the home front. He may fuss if the food isn’t just right, the house spotless, and all affairs conducted according to perfectionistic standards. He is especially critical of himself for having feelings. Any upsurge of unacceptable feelings or lacks may be covered up by overworking, picking at himself, or criticizing others. Security is a long to do list with almost everything crossed off by the end of the day.

Men with Virgo Moons: Lance Armstrong, Willem Defoe, Mark Harmon, Jay Leno, Matthew McConaughey, Busta Rhymes, Chris Rock, John Travolta and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

I have been studying astrology for years, and it is ever disheartening to see the ill effects the moon in every sign has on people. There is always a side note about how horrible the mother was in some way or other. As a mother, there is no winning I guess, since all mothers sound like the root of all evil. I have three children who all have three different moon signs… Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces. Obviously with each child I was either too intense, manipulating, judgemental, devoid of feeling or a “saint/martyr/slave. Astrology pretty much never says, “Wow, what a hardworking, loving mom you had.” As I said, it is disheartening. Especially as each sun sign (the father image) has such great qualities attached to it. Perhaps it’s time for astrology to take another look at how the woman /mother/moon is always the bad guy.

Ouch. My moon’s in Virgo, and this article’s description is spot-on. Though I’ve gotten my Chiron to work more to my advantage in the last year or so, and I’ve discovered how to keep myself from working myself sick physically… but, in turn, I now run myself into the ground until I absolutely cannot take it emotionally and have to take loads of alone-time to avert a breakdown. So I guess that means the same general ‘self-denial until emergency situation is nigh’ mechanism is still in play.

It’s intriguing how the influences of certain orbs/aspects can be recognised even as they morph into different expressions across one’s lifetime.
