Samfield via Creative Commons license

When folks start learning about astrology and synastry, they run to Venus/Mars aspects to find out whether they’re compatible with their partners. Venus/Mars is about sexual give and take: my style of loving is in tune with your desire. But, as everyone knows, sex is a lot more complicated than that.

We don’t always express our love via Venus. Venus can be a diva with a come-hither look; she draws what she wants (and sometimes doesn’t want) via the principle of attraction. Venus/Mars contacts can be surprisingly shallow. Unless they’re tied up to Pluto or under the spell of Neptune or Uranus, they can also be surprisingly tame. They’re about compatibility, pure and simple. There are more passionate pair-ups.

Moon/Mars, for one. For some reason, this aspect has had a low profile in synastry. But when I hear of a synastry that is all about heat, this is one of the first aspects I look for. It has a bad reputation from the old “cookbook” schools of astrology. They used to say, “Mars equals violence/aggression, and the Moon equals emotions/comfort, therefore Mars will be mean to the Moon.” Well, yes and no, and more likely no. Not where sex is concerned.

Moon/Mars is where sex meets the psyche. A lot of the Moon/Mars interpretations from the old texts come from a lack of understanding of what the Moon actually represents. The Moon is everything we are and everything we have been, going back to the beginning, or over lifetimes, if your beliefs go that way. The lunar package also includes our emotions, our instinctive reactions, and the way our mind interacts with our body. The Moon also represents the physical body itself. The Greeks defined it as Soul. Between partners, Mars is turned on by the deepest fathoms of the Self.

Again, we have a pairing of a feminine planet (the Moon) with a masculine one. But the Moon is much more primal and instinctive than Venus. The Moon reveals our basic needs for fulfillment. It tells us what makes us satisfied and happy. When the Moon is happy, we feel complete.

In synastry, these needs of the Moon – whatever they may be (physical, psychological, spiritual) – are sensed by a hungry Mars, and ignite and inflame his passions. Mars senses the Moon intensely, and instinctively strives to fulfill her needs. Mars needs a purpose to really get it going, and here the Moon becomes that purpose. At the same time, the Moon – grateful for the acknowledgement of its needs – longs to nurture and satisfy Mars, and take him into a safe place deep within. She senses and is turned on by his raw desire to connect with her.

Moon/Mars contacts can be highly erotic, but it isn’t an eroticism based on surface attraction. With Moon/Mars, Mars is attracted by the very essence of the Moon, the whole complicated package – conscious and unconscious. Many times, the attraction between Moon and Mars is mysterious; they connect on such a primal level that it’s hard to bring the reasons for the attraction to the surface. A Moon/Mars interaction tends to be silent and deep.

Trouble can come in many ways, but most often it’s when Mars is either too eager, or too cutting to the Moon’s delicate psyche. Mars may burst in and blunder into tender areas the Moon is not ready to expose, or the Moon may be too guarded, or too shy. Mars may go overboard in trying to penetrate to the Moon’s darkest secrets, stumbling into old hurts and reopening wounds. This causes the Moon to back away or shut down, and a rejected Mars may either pursue or give up the chase. Mars has an opportunity to heal the blockages that are preventing the Moon from shining its light to the fullest, but whether it knows this or not will depend on the qualities of Mars in the chart. In turn, the Moon can validate Mars in its ambitions and pursuits, providing support and emotional sustenance.

The Moon is also about our feelings of security, and Mars may be a lot of things, but he’s not a guy to instill feelings of safety. Mars can disturb and threaten the Moon’s habits and rituals, the things that it needs to get through the day. The Moon may decide that she likes the stimulation of being challenged, or she may decide that she’s had enough. It’s up to the Moon to teach Mars how to tread carefully.

Moon/Mars is never an easy aspect. It causes partners to be constantly aware of the energy exchange between them, and the effect that it has on both. Even at its most soothing and well-aspected, the sexual stimulation is always accompanied by the rolling waves of a deeper awareness. It takes some maturity to handle this aspect well, because we need to learn how to read one another’s signals and retreat when comfort zones are in danger of being violated. For those who like an easy ride in relationships, and prefer not to explore the inner layers of our being, this aspect may be too hot to handle.

In the classic movie Sabrina (pick your favorite version – Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart or Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford), Sabrina Fairchild – the daughter of the Larrabee family’s chauffeur – returns home from her Paris education a confident and sophisticated young woman. She develops a burning infatuation with the engaged playboy son of the Larrabee clan, David. David has his own doubts about his impending marriage to a wealthy young socialite, a woman whose whole family is going to bed with the Larrabee Corporation in a lucrative business deal. David doesn’t miss a beat in picking up on Sabrina’s yearning glances. As married-to-the-business older brother, Linus, watches, David plans his seduction of the chauffeur’s daughter, believing himself to be “falling in love” with her. Sabrina allows herself to succumb to the dubious charms of this “bad boy,” melting into the dreams of her childhood.

Cold and calculating Linus will have none of it. He will not have a multi-million (or billion, depending on the movie) deal fly out the window because of another of David’s short lived affairs. Even as he prepares his checkbook to buy off the affections yet again of one of David’s dubious love choices, he finds out that both the ill-suited lovers are hell bent on their illusions. In the guise of the helpful brother, he tries to deflect the attentions of Sabrina to himself, with the ultimate strategy of sending her safely off to Paris once his plan is accomplished. Who would think of love in such a cold and callous way? Who would even think that social standing is part of the equation of amour? Who would dare to believe that ills in matters of the heart could be cured with a big enough checkbook? Someone with Saturn in the Seventh House, that’s who.

Saturn is not well placed in the house of relationships. In the Ormond/Ford version, Sabrina calls Linus “the only living heart donor.”

Listen to Linus’ explanation of why he hadn’t married:

“If I got married, I’d have to take a Dictaphone, two secretaries and four corporation counselors along on the honeymoon.

I’d be unfaithful to my wife every night with vice presidents, boards of directors, slide-rule accountants…

This … [indicating his office] this is my home.
No wife would ever understand it.”

(from the 1954 version of Sabrina)

Is it business or is it the coldness of their hearts? No, actually it is more complex than that.

Relationships require give and take of equals. The truth be known, Saturn in the Seventh denizens secretly measure people as better than or worse than them. Until they evolve past that point, they set up impossible goals in matters of love. Their ideal love is nothing less than perfection itself, something so unattainable that no flesh-and-blood lover could ever fulfill their requirements.

In addition, they themselves do not feel worthy enough of the kind of love they seek, so ultimately they bury themselves in their work, trying to make themselves good enough. However, this doesn’t mean they won’t mix it up with the opposite sex. Underneath the cool demeanor of the Saturn in the Seventh individual is a real sense of kink, someone who gets off on making it with people who are totally unsuitable partners. However, the trap is that once they get involved, Saturn keeps them locked into the relationship. This leads to another reason why Saturn in the Seventh is such a difficult position.

The Saturn in the Seventh person is leery of partnerships because these folks take on a great deal of the labor of the relationship, physical, emotional or both. The Saturn in the Seventh person tends to a marriage like a business, and while every bill will be paid on time, don’t expect “extra” money or time to be available for the fun things. That money is zipped up in savings or investments for a rainy day, or retirement, whichever comes first – and the time is spent on all-important work projects.

The Saturn person will support the partner in many ways, giving the partner “the hand up” they need to come up to the Saturn’s person’s expectations. The Saturn in the Seventh native does have high standards, expecting their partner to be hard-working, sober, stable and faithful – whether or not their partner has shown these traits in the past. When the expected “reward” of the relationship is not forthcoming, the Saturn person can simmer in their resentments. These resentments are often used to “cash in” on the reason why they won’t marry their lover. In their view, it’s the other’s persons fault that they can’t climb the pedestal on which the Saturn in Seventh person wants to place them.

Marrying young is generally not a good idea for these folks, since they need a fair amount of seasoning to be a good marriage bet. They need to work out their uber sense of responsibility to keep a relationship going. They need to work on their poor sense of self-esteem that allows to them to make choices in partners that are not good for them, or that holds potential lovers to a standard no one could attain. Once they do, however, they are the poster children for happily ever after, utilizing the best of Saturn’s traits to be sterling catches for someone who wants a forever love.

True to Saturn in the Seventh form, at the end of Sabrina, Linus managed to send off the chauffeur’s daughter to Paris, then realized he wanted her after all. He ran off after her, leaving the merger in David’s hands. But if you ask me, Linus was probably back to work within a month, married to Sabrina, with her pregnant. Saturn in the Seventh gets down to business once his or her mind is made up. He or she couldn’t do otherwise.

Relationship astrology or “synastry” explores both the bonds that unite couples as well as the conflicts that cause strains in relationships. Sun-Moon and Venus-Mars aspects are very popular in romantic synastry readings: The former shed light on potential emotional connections and the latter are all about passion and chemistry. But if you want to add an extra layer of understanding to relationship analysis, you would do well to invest some time in looking at nodal connections in synastry.

The nodal axis speaks of the trajectory of a soul’s growth. While the South Node represents the skills a person has mastered in the past, the North Node describes the current learning task. Some people ascribe karmic significance to the nodes and believe that one person’s planets touching the other’s nodal axis indicates a karmic link. If you subscribe to this belief, then someone’s planet touching your South Node shows a past-life connection. The planet involved reveals the nature of the past relationship: Venus conjunct the South Node points towards a past-life lover; the Moon conjunction may indicate a maternal figure; and Jupiter, a teacher or a benefactor.

People often feel magnetically drawn to a person whose chart is linked to their South Node. This linkage confers a feeling of familiarity that is hard to resist. David Beckham’s Venus in Gemini is exactly conjunct Victoria Beckham’s South Node. This is what he says about their romance in Both Feet on the Ground: An Autobiography: “My wife picked me out of a soccer sticker book. And I chose her off the telly… It felt straight away like we’d always been meant to be together.”

North Node links are also powerful. Since the North Node is the energy or the lesson that a person needs to learn, these connections are believed to be stronger compared to the South Node when it comes to predicting the longevity of relationships. The person whose planet aspects another’s North Node is like a teacher pulling them toward their future personal evolution.

Bill Clinton’s Taurus Moon is conjunct Hillary’s North Node and her Descendant. Her stellium in Scorpio makes Hillary an intense woman and her Pisces Moon indicates great emotional sensitivity. For her, Bill’s emotionally steady and down-to-earth Taurus Moon is like the proverbial Rock of Gibraltar on which she can lean in times of turmoil. But more than that, this aspect of his personality is something that she needs to emulate if she is to grow as a person. North Node bonds, since they are future-oriented, are a contributing factor in relationships that endure.

Significant relationships, both platonic and romantic, are often marked by nodal ties between charts. So whether you are already in a relationship or thinking of embarking on one, look to see what the nodes are doing. Understanding these linkages will add another dimension to your insight into the relationship’s dynamics.

About this series by famed astrologer, Donna Cunningham: Astrologers feel that the Moon in a man’s chart shows what his mother was like and therefore, the type of woman he feels most at home with. Many years ago, the famed psychologist, Carl Jung did a research study to determine the glue that held marriages together. A devotee of astrology, he looked at the charts of hundreds of couples who stayed together for the long haul and were compatible. He found that when the Moon sign of one of them was the same sign as the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant of the other, they were most likely to stay together because they could live together with more comfort. In this 4-part series, we’ll be looking at men’s Moon signs and, to give you a sense of what they’re like, some examples of famous men with those Moons.

Moon in Capricorn: Like the rings of Saturn, this guy surrounds himself with a protective wall, unwilling to rely on anyone. Security is extremely important, but he finds it in a well-kept resume and financial portfolio rather than in people. Often successful and gifted at management, Capricorn Moons abound among the most renowned world leaders throughout history. If driven to succeed, as so many of them are, he can become a workaholic and an absentee husband and father.

He’s very traditional where women are concerned. Mother was an ambitious, perfectionistic person, dutiful rather than warm, so he experiences women as demanding rather than giving. He draws clear boundaries in dealing with them, so nobody gets too close. The safest emotion is a well-controlled depression – anger, anguish, even joy are too apt to rock the boat. In the struggle to stifle feelings and override his needs, he’s likely to develop a delicate stomach, suffer from melancholy, or drink too much. You’re allowed to fuss over him if he’s sick. It’s in your job description.

Men with Capricorn Moons: Andrea Bocelli, Jon Bon Jovi, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Ron Howard, Magic Johnson, the Dalai Lama, David Letterman, Ray Romano.

Moon in Aquarius: If he had a mother who was erratic and often cold, he has great difficulty dealing with emotions and dependency. He can get very hot under the collar about social injustices and discharge many of his feelings that way. When you show emotions or needs of your own, he dismisses them with, “Oh, everybody goes through that. It’s due to the way society is set up.” Women are seen as comrades in arms and expected to sublimate their needs to the cause or group goal. (The positive male of this type may have had a mother who was an advanced thinker or committed to social change.)

If he can take care of whole classes of people, he won’t have to get personally involved. By staying detached, he can avoid being flooded by anything as irrational as emotions. When the flood comes, he goes. When not dealt with, however, those repressed emotions can come out in periodic explosions from left field. Many with this Moon sign were subjected to traumatic losses and separations in childhood. If so, he doesn’t look for security in a traditional home and family setting, but in attachments to causes, ideas, or the group.

Men with Aquarius Moons: David Copperfield, Russell Crowe, Billy Ray Cyrus, David Duchovny, Lorenzo Lamas, John Malkovich, Conan O’Brien, and Denzel Washington.

Moon in Pisces: Pisces Moons have tremendous emotionality, sensitivity, and dependency … also great softness and other-worldliness. None of these traits are considered even remotely acceptable in macho cultures. To avoid the crushing disapproval, he may try to mask his real nature. How would a Piscean Moon do that? Well, he gets approval for “drinking like a man,” and being able to hold his booze. Or, he could become a priest or the modern equivalent.

Finding a wife who’s a saint/martyr/slave just like Mom is another solution but, oddly, he can also flip-flop and be extremely vulnerable to women who need rescuing. He can use tools like therapy and meditation to forge a good connection with his unconscious, his lunar hemisphere, and his spirituality. Many also find a valid emotional outlet in music, art, or other creative expressions.

Men with Pisces Moons: Garth Brooks, Carson Daly, Stedman Graham, Michael Jackson, Rush Limbaugh, Ricky Martin, Ben Stiller, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner.

Moon in Libra: Many Libra Moon boys were put in the position of surrogate husband for Mother Dear and were expected to smooth over threats to domestic tranquility. As a result, the adult tries to keep unpleasant feelings hidden – they are just too tacky, and what would people say? For him, security rests in having the love and approval of everyone always. He’s extremely dependent on his love of the moment and unfulfilled when there’s no romance on the horizon.

If he’s unable to ask for things, he shifts the focus to you and your needs so you won’t know he has any. What he doesn’t say is that you’re expected to read his mind and balance the scale. It’s only fair, and why isn’t anyone considerate enough to do it? He romanticizes women and expects them to be oh so charming and lovely – don’t you know that tears and ugly feelings can mar that pretty face?

Men with Libra Moons: Nicholas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mel Gibson, Tommy Hilfiger, Julian Lennon, Patrick Rafter, Steven Seagal, and Noah Wyle.

Moon in Scorpio: If he had a mother who dominated either overtly or through manipulation, this man may have an understandable paranoia about women. His motto is: if you let yourself be dependent, women are going to control you, so hide your needs and keep the upper hand. He feels women’s Achilles heel is sex, so if you can be a fantastic lover, you’ve got them right under your thumb. Intensely emotional, this type doesn’t readily share his feelings, for people in his family or early environment may have used them against him.

Their positive qualities are great depth and fearlessness in confronting their own emotions and yours. They won’t tell you not to cry. They are able and willing to stick with you in times of crisis and may be able to offer insights into the situation, for they are born psychologists. They are willing to work through problems and can have the strength of diamonds in hard times. They have great motivation and perseverance in improving themselves and their lot in life.

Men with Scorpio Moons: Ben and Casey Affleck (Moon signs can run in families), Esai Morales, Eddie Murphy, Shaquille O’Neal, Tony Shalhoub, and Snoop Dog.

Moon in Sagittarius: For him, security consists of knowing it all. He digests upsetting experiences, extracts every bit of wisdom, and then teaches you what he learned from them. When you talk to him about feelings, you might get a discourse like the following: “How did it feel? Well, that depends on your perspective, you see. My mother, who was a bit of an amateur philosopher, always used to say . . . and my history teacher, she was quite a sage in her own right . . . and what were we talking about?”

Did you say feelings? As mom taught him, all emotions pass, so we shouldn’t get attached to them, just look for the lesson to be learned and march on ahead. Attachments of all kinds are transient. Dependency? That’s for the uneducated, those who don’t see that real security rests in knowing the meaning of life.

Men with Sagittarian Moons: Danny Bonaduce, Kevin Costner, Vin Diesel, Michael Jordan, Sean Lennon, Tim Robbins, George Stephanopoulos, and Tiger Woods.

Moon in Cancer: With the Moon in the Moon’s own sign, Cancer, these are the real lunar types, the ones who are bound to run into problems with machismo because they are sensitive, emotional, and attached to home and family. The lunar qualities are too strong and immediate to ignore, so such a man may develop a tough shell to maintain his cool. He is also likely to marry a real earth mother who’ll meet his needs automatically without him having to ask.

His own mother may have been a smotherer, and he’s often still tied to her symbiotically. If he has to hide his feelings, he can seek relief by eating or drinking too much or remaining overly dependent on his family. Stomach problems or emotional explosions can also result from repression. If he’s liberated from the masculine stereotype, the Cancerian can be wonderfully tender, able to give and receive nurturing. He can also be warmly protective and responsive to your feelings and his own.

Men with Cancer Moons: Tim Allen, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Busfield, David Hasselhoff, Willie Nelson, Keanu Reeves, Kurt Russell, Yanni, Yo Yo Ma, and Dweezil Zappa.

Moon in Leo: The Leo Moon may actually be quite dependent, but puts on a show of confidence and fearlessness, with a certain sort of smug machismo. He’s too proud to show his needs or confess his insecurities. He may cover up by roaring and striking out as fiercely as the lion which symbolizes his sign. Leo expects to rule, so when his dominance is questioned, he may become angry. Still, he genuinely enjoys women and can make you feel like a princess. The role of queen is reserved for his mom, who could be quite the Queen Bee and thus a bit much to deal with as a mother-in-law.

His home is his castle and he likes the décor to reflect that. He is luxury-loving and wants meals fit for a king. You, as Queen Consort, must preside at his functions as perfectly as the Queen Mother herself did when he was growing up. Leo Moons, on the positive side, are sunny rather than brooding, so the general emotional tone is warm and fun-loving.

Men with Leo Moons: The older generation with Moon in Leo include Tom Selleck and Kris Kristofferson. Others with this Moon sign are Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Chad Lowe, and the late Patrick Swayze.

Moon in Virgo: He may well have had a mother who was intolerant of his dependency and yet convinced him he was incompetent to make it without her. As an adult, he continuously questions his worth and competency. He has to prove it compulsively to himself, to the women in his life, and to the world at large. He may become a workaholic, critical of himself for having any needs at all.

He only allows himself to “slack off” under one circumstance. That’s when he gets sick, which he can do fairly frequently as the years roll on, unless he learns to accept and meet his own needs. His dependency can come out in being demanding on the home front. He may fuss if the food isn’t just right, the house spotless, and all affairs conducted according to perfectionistic standards. He is especially critical of himself for having feelings. Any upsurge of unacceptable feelings or lacks may be covered up by overworking, picking at himself, or criticizing others. Security is a long to do list with almost everything crossed off by the end of the day.

Men with Virgo Moons: Lance Armstrong, Willem Defoe, Mark Harmon, Jay Leno, Matthew McConaughey, Busta Rhymes, Chris Rock, John Travolta and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

In the movie Pretty Woman — the modern Cinderella story — business mogul Edward tries to strike up a deal with prostitute Vivian to keep seeing her when he comes to town. She turns him down, telling him he isn’t offering enough. Like a true businessman, he continues to negotiate, asking her what she wants. She replies, “I want the fairy tale.” When Edward doesn’t provide it, Vivian leaves with a tear in her eye, but knows she’s doing the right thing. She, a career hooker, wouldn’t cheapen the love she feels for this man by succumbing to the lure of mere dollar and cents. Despite the divide in professions, education and socio-economic class, Vivian feels there should be no less between them than Edward offering her the glass slipper and making her his princess. Through the Neptunian lens of the movies, we have the perfect example of how Neptune operates in the Seventh House of Partnerships.

The native with Neptune in the Seventh House has high ideals and high expectations when it comes to partnerships. Love is the grand expression of true, breathtaking romance. The object of the native’s affection is royalty, regardless of her friends or family’s opinions on the matter. In fact, it doesn’t matter at all if her lover is an actual toad. With a kiss, Neptune performs his most profound magic, and all is as it should be.

Or is it? Neptunian waters are tricky to navigate. Beneath the placid beauty of ocean waters lapping onto a sandy beach is a whole down-and-dirty ecosystem of predators and prey. Unless the Seventh House Neptune native is fearlessly honest regarding what is real and what is an expression of her desires, reality — when it does hit –- is not just a slap in the face. It is a sledgehammer.

Celebrities with broken hearts and relationships — sporting Seventh House Neptune — litter Hollywood Boulevard. One such celebrity is Heather Locklear [view chart at Astro-DataBank]. Married to and then divorced from cheating-hearts rock star Tommy Lee, she soon took up with troubled rock star Richie Sambora. What did she think was going to be different? Did she not get enough of the rock star lifestyle the first go ‘round? And why did she marry against her squeaky-clean “girl next door” image not once, but twice? A natural born Libra, with her Sun in the Seventh House, she has a driving need to be in relationship, even with a restless Aries Moon. But it is that Neptune conjunct her Mars and Mercury in Libra in the Seventh House that glossed over the issues and whispered in her ear, “This time it will be different.”

The exception that nearly proves the rule is Paul Newman, whose death-do-us-part marriage to Joanne Woodward is the stuff of Hollywood legend — except that their long-term union was built on his extra-marital affair with her, leading to the breakup of his first marriage. Hardly the stuff we would expect from a knight in shining armor.

Both these cases illustrate the need for natives with Neptune in the Seventh House to be swept away in a grand, all-consuming romance. Sense and reason –- as well as duties and responsibilities –- take a back seat to this need. In Pretty Woman, Edward and Vivian, from all outside appearances, would have a long row to hoe to a make their union work for the long term. And one really wonders how Cinderella and her Prince really did live “happily ever after,” with his overindulgent parents and her interfering stepmother. But these two stories are the work of fiction. The challenge for the native with Neptune in the Seventh House is to discern reality from fiction in their relationships.

Moon in Aries: Men with this Moon are conflicted about closeness. Dependency is threatening, so he keeps on the move to avoid sticky involvements. He looks for a take-charge female who won’t expect to be babied and who might accidentally nurture him a bit while running the show. Unfortunately, Mom also wore the pants, and he’s got a chip on his shoulder toward women because of it. He takes a fighting stance toward any threat to his security.

Action is his remedy for any problem, even those with no immediate solution. Emotions threaten him, too, so look for a good fight if you provoke any. It’s not easy to get next to him with the soft, sharing aspects of relating because it’s so hard for him to own up to those parts of himself. For him, sex may be a sublimation of the finer facets of intimacy.

Men with Aries Moons: Antonio Banderas, Anderson Cooper, Enrique Iglesias, Emeril Lagasse, Mario Lopez, Kevin Spacey, Kiefer Sutherland, Randy Travis, Stevie Wonder and a bajillion athletes.

Moon in Taurus: He accepts the cultural stereotypes of what men and women ought to be because he’s old-fashioned. He basically likes women. He chooses the ones who do good Moon things in a consistent and down-to-earth way, like Mom did, in return for his protectiveness and stability. He then feels he has to make a killing in the business world. Material things are security and insurance that the lady won’t leave him stranded with his dependency needs down.

Food has strong associations of security, comfort, and squelching feelings that might interfere with serenity. He can, however, become the raging bull when pressured to change too quickly. Ditto when there are threats to his security, such as a loss of money, belongings, or the lady in his life! Thus, he can be possessive and rather jealous.

Men with Taurus Moons: Kobe Bryant, Matt Dillon, Robert Downey Jr., Michael J. Fox, Hugh Grant, Dennis Leary, Rob Lowe, Dr. Phil McGraw, and Montel Williams.

Moon in Gemini: Intellectually he might reject the macho stereotype because that’s how he handles everything — intellectually. He knows feelings exist because he’s read all about them, and he can talk about them quite articulately. Neither he nor you should get too deeply into them, however, or he might have to fight you off with that glib tongue and facile wit. Words are a screen to avoid closeness and to prevent anyone from recognizing his vulnerability.

He feels dependency simply isn’t logical in a grown man, so it isn’t to be tolerated. Nothing can make him insecure as long as it’s analyzed and categorized. However, give him something to deal with that he can’t put a label on and he gets thrown for a loop. It’s nice that he’s found a woman of your intellectual caliber who can appreciate his brilliance and wit. Mom always said he’d be the next Hemingway.

Men with Gemini Moons: Jason Alexander, John Edwards, Fabio, Wayne Gretzky, Howie Mandel, Dylan McDermott, Freddie Prinz Jr., Barak Obama, and Colin Quinn.

As with most things in life, sexuality is a complex creature with multiple layers of experience, and that complexity is mirrored in the variety of sexual expressions that we see in the astrological chart. The sexual experience encompasses a wide variety of motivations and feelings, and the astrological signatures for these feelings help us to understand more about how we approach sexuality in our own life.

Typically, astrologers look to Mars for the expression of the sexual drive. Mars rules our drive and desire, and therefore it rules sexual desire along with our desire for ice cream or a new car. Any desire is fueled by the energy of Mars to activate something in the individual, and sexuality is no exception.

Mars also describes the way we pursue what we want; it shows what kind of sexuality we prefer and how we go about attracting a partner. The placement and aspects of Mars describe the sexual techniques and feelings that are most comfortable to us. For example, an airy Mars is more likely to be stimulated by the energy of sex, or to be drawn to sexual fantasies and ideas. An earthy Mars will require lots of physical contact. Watery Mars prefers powerful emotional content to the sexual experience, and fiery Mars is all about desire and the scratching of an itch. The aspects that other planets make to Mars help to color the sexual experience as well. Saturn conjunct Mars may inhibit our sexuality; Jupiter square Mars could signify a large number of sexual conquests.

Mars is the ancient ruler of Scorpio, and Scorpio is well-known for its sexy qualities. To the ancients, Scorpio embodied the drive of Mars – the fire that burns deep within the soul to achieve release and ecstasy. Scorpio’s modern ruler Pluto opens the door to a new understanding of sexuality that was well known to the ancient Tantric sages of Eastern mysticism — that sexuality is interwoven with power and magic, and holds within it the seeds of spiritual transformation. So with Pluto and Scorpio, as well as the Eighth House, we have another level of sexuality: the intimacy of soul connection and the power of passion.

The Fifth House is often associated with love affairs, but these affairs and romantic experiences have more to do with the expression of the self and the Ego than a true experience of sexuality. Fifth House affairs are purely for fun and for feeling good about ourselves rather than for the deep emotional bonding that would take place in the Eighth House.

And finally, Venus, that delicious goddess of love, is typically less concerned with sex than with the connection of the lives that two people share. Venus (Aphrodite) used the power of her sexuality to attract but appeared to have had little interest in the sexual act itself. In fact, she rejected all of her suitors and it wasn’t until she fell into a relationship with Mars (Ares), the god of war and desire, that she appears to have lost some of the control for which she was famous.

When we are looking for sexual compatibility, it is Mars and Pluto that will reveal the secrets!

You’ve had a few dates and things are going well, but at some time into the relationship, the bitch will make an appearance — it has to, no one can sustain that level of perfection forever! The really dark side of each sign, the side that stays hidden until you know you have your date hooked (or vice versa), comes out sooner or later. If you don’t like it raw and nasty, turn away now. But if you want to know your Bitch Rating — with five stars being the bitchiest of them all — read on.

FIRE SIGNS

Generally speaking, fire ranks low on the bitchiness scale. Agreed, the temper can blow to boiling status within a nanosecond, but generally speaking, without sufficient fuel, fire burns itself out relatively quickly.

Aries
Your temper reaches boiling point (and back again) in less than a second. You disagree (loudly) with anything that isn’t your idea, and arrogantly expect your partner to give way or suffer the consequences. You are pathologically competitive and the zodiac’s worst loser, but your bitch rating is low because you simply do not have the attention span required to hold a really good grudge. Stay away from flat-pack furniture and anything with instructions.

Leo
When you are King (or Queen) of all you survey, why demean yourself with nasty gossip or bitching? Your temper is modeled on the worst of toddler supermarket tantrums, and makes for entertaining theater. Your drama lasts as long as is necessary to achieve maximum impact, at which point you will allow yourself to be soothed and petted back to purring.

Sagittarius
Your bitch rating is so low, it’s almost off the scale. Even though you have the quick temper of all your Fire friends, you don’t have the time (or the inclination) to hang around and make a “thing” about it. So, you explode in a rampage of shouting — crudely and tactlessly blurting out what you need to say, and tearing off to your next adventure without another thought. Your victims are either laughing at the display or sobbing over the exceptionally rude remark you have already forgotten about. You, on the other hand, are falling over something new.

EARTH SIGNS

Mud can be thrown, and it is some dirty, mucky stuff — and if there is no real practical reason to lose your temper, why waste the energy?

Taurus
It all seems like too much effort to get worked up about anything. But when you do, the earth shakes and those horns can disembowel anyone within reach. The Bull’s temper takes a while to arouse (which is why your bitch rating is only 2 stars), but it takes just as long for you to calm down — you like to hang on to things, tightly. But you do get over it, eventually. Smart people know to wait a few days (or a week, or a month) and approach only with chocolate … or a back rub.

Virgo
You wear your victims down with incessant nagging and detail. You tell your date that her bum looks fat in those jeans because (a) she asked, and it does; (b) you know the best diets; and (c) you only criticize the ones you love. You don’t have a temper as such, because you don’t have time to get really mad — there is too much to do because no one else cares enough to do anything properly — and you will have the dates and other supporting evidence to prove it.

Capricorn
You don’t like to embarrass yourself in front of those you need to impress, so carefully consider their rank and wallet before unleashing that unforgiving temper of yours. But should you or your status be shown any disrespect, you will head-butt the presumptuous young upstart back down the ladder where they belong — no matter how undignified it may appear. After all, experience counts so much more than youth and speed.

AIR SIGNS

Air uses its brilliant mental capacity wisely.

Gemini
Bitch extraordinaire. You prefer to get even rather than mad, and have a deadly brain that stores random, trivial information that can be used when it really counts. While bitch twin is using that razor sharp tongue to do some serious cutting, the nice twin can be sucking up and apologizing with absolute heartfelt sincerity. You are at your worst and most destructive when bored, but thankfully don’t have the attention span to focus on a satisfying revenge.

Libra
Anger is so unattractive … and likely to result in broken nails, unsightly red blotchy eyes, and messed hair. It is more effective to flounce around a little and stamp your designer heels — you are usually able to get what you want with charm and a few well-placed poisonous remarks to your friends over coffee. It would never occur to you to say something nasty directly to someone — not because it would hurt them, but because it would make you look bad. It’s so much more civilized to get someone else to do that for you.

Aquarius
With that database that is your brain, you are able to coolly detach as soon as commitment — such a 20th century concept — raises its nasty head. Mentally, you are so far above most people that it takes a really worthy opponent for you to bother crushing them. So, speaking theoretically, you can destroy with icepick precision, but in practice there are so many other more worthwhile things your brain could be doing…

WATER SIGNS

Water is motivated by feeling, so has the capacity to take anything and everything personally. This has the potential to produce a really creative and totally effective bitch.

Cancer
Your bitch rating depends on the Moon phase — zero to an absolutely filthy temper in a second … or a passive-aggressive retreat into your shell to indulge your misery, eat copious amounts of chocolate, and practice everything you’ll say next time you scuttle out. Naturally suspicious of the world and the gloom it brings with it, you don’t forget a grievance — it just proves you were right to be mistrusting. Don’t mess with Mamma Crab…

Scorpio
Scorpio is the undisputed king of the colorful revenge fantasy. You are obsessive, possessive, manipulative, and have an absolute lust for Total Control. Your rage is carefully controlled to ensure your victims never quite know when they will be struck down. But you rarely shout — cold, calm flatlining is much more frightening. You analytical brain lets you dig out any weakness in your prey, and you have enough focus to wait … for the right time, and the right place. Scorpio does not forget, never forgives, and never ever ever apologizes.

Pisces
Surprised? Don’t be. Pisces at its most creative can be the absolute master manipulator and an underwater stealth bomber. This is mainly because you avoid conflict and lack the focus to engage in direct one-on-one combat. Your greatest advantage is that people continually underestimate you … or feel sorry for you. Meanwhile, they have told you their deepest, darkest secrets and exposed their weak emotional points — which you can, of course, use … later. If you get caught, just shrug your shoulders and blame someone else or alcohol: “Sorry, I was drunk and it just happened.” These things do….
