The mutable signs usher in the seasons. The sign of Sagittarius bellows across the universe, “Hey Capricorn, this autumn is getting blustery. Can you close the doors?” The sign of Pisces fawns, hands the keys of winter to Aries and says “Can you open these doors?” Mutables then are regulators; they literally “mix things up.” They are adjusters and energy conduits – the love energy tends to drift through and from these signs. Often they initiate flirtation just as one season “flirts” with the next. So how might each sign do this? Let’s take a look:

Pisces might fawn, open her big eyes, look, look away, look up and then down. The signals will be extremely subtle, almost subconscious, but signals they will be. Aries might jump in and initiate contact thinking he started the whole thing. Think again, Aries!

Gemini might be more obvious. Perhaps he glances quickly as if to try and connect a scene happening somewhere else to the two of you. Maybe he’ll cough, as if to say something. Cancer recognizes the desire for rapport and begins the emotional connection.

Virgo might shift around a little, sending a signal of “look at me” – look at this lovely craftsmanship, look at how well I’ve worked on myself. It serves me well – could serve you, too. Libra goes, Oooooh! Love a bit of quality!

Sagittarius might flick the hair, beam big smiles and pin the shoulders back. Maybe they’ll laugh, purposely catching the eye of the other. Capricorn just wants to bottle all this enthusiasm up. “It’ll be a cold winter,” he thinks.

Mutable signs have this innate flirtatious quality which does make them suggestible. They also seem to rely on context – it’s more about “the moment” for them. They feel the ebb and flow. The mutable signs are indeed the glue of the zodiac, their nature somewhat dualistic, malleable and youthful.

So … Gemini, Sagittarius, Virgo and Pisces – never again see yourselves as flaky and ambiguous. Without you, the wheel of life would never turn.

BE PASSIONATE – Faith and Tim’s wedding astrology has four planets in fire signs: the Moon and Mars in Leo, Saturn in Aries and Pluto in Sagittarius, giving them natural outlets through creativity and an enthusiasm for life. But with the Sun in Libra opposed to Saturn, their relationship is a priority and they probably work hard to keep it strong.

BE COMMITTED – Here’s another celebrity wedding chart with the Sun opposite Saturn, this time in the fixed signs of Scorpio and Taurus, quite a committed signature. The chart also has four more planets – including the Moon and Mercury – in stable fixed signs. The Moon in Leo accentuates their dramatic flair and is especially suitable for these two Libras.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith (married December 31, 1997)

SHARE YOUR INDIVIDUALITY – Will and Jada’s wedding astrology has five planets in Aquarius. While they’ve worked together, they more often pursue independent projects. Nevertheless, their individuality keeps them together, as Aquarius is a fixed sign adding commitment and longevity. They’re probably best friends. The Sun in Capricorn is a nice touch for these two Virgos, which helps ground them and work on their relationship.

This is the famous, or the infamous Black Moon Lilith. The other two Liliths are Asteroid Lilith and Dark Moon Lilith (Waldemaths Moon). Much of Lilith’s bad reputation in synastry is actually more to do with these two.

Contacts to Asteroid Lilith may show where there are power struggles between a couple, whether a man will accept equality in his partner or not. If there are hard aspects between them, this could mean anything from bickering about who wears the trousers to domestic violence. Harmonious aspects may show where the couple experiment, are eccentric or kinky. They may play out their equality battles in the bedroom with role playing games, for example.

Contacts to Dark Moon Lilith will show each one’s demons and buried rage. Positive connections may offer an avenue where these demons can be exorcized. They could do this through channeling the angst into creative projects together, raising the energy to a higher vibration. Ego must be set aside in order to do this, and it helps if the couple has some sort of spiritual practice to implement this. Otherwise, the worst case scenario would be this manifesting as vengeful behaviour, Sadomasochism, seething rage and sexual and psychological abuse. Another way for this to be cathartic in a sexual way could be to engage in some light S&M and bondage.

Black Moon Lilith is not about any of the above. Her bad reputation may have come about because of her electric magnetism, psychic abilities and power to mesmerize. Obviously, these gifts are wonderful unless they are used for manipulation, mind control and promoting evil deeds. But in herself, she is not “evil.” However, she is bewitching.

Lastly, of course, she is highly sexual. Her sexuality is not primarily used for procreation, which for some religions is deemed as sinful. So, its power can be used for spiritual enlightenment and finding the god/goddess within. This is very threatening for Western religions that place Godliness outside the human body and Mother Earth. This is how Lilith became demonized.

Therefore, synastry connections with Black Moon Lilith show where you feel this magic and how it plays out. Double whammys (for example, your Lilith aspects their Sun and their Lilith aspects your Sun) are great because they give each partner the opportunity to be “The Lilith,” and that makes them the most powerful of all.

Harmonious: The Sun partner will flood the Lilith partner with magical sunbeams, amping up their power. The Lilith partner will inspire creativity in the Sun partner, making them feel like a King or Queen.

Kim Novak in Bell, Book and Candle

When we meet Gillian, she is working in her shop on Christmas Eve, and hapless building neighbor Shep Henderson, a book publisher, wanders into her shop to use the telephone. Gillian admires him from afar, so as she chats him up, she is disappointed to learn that he is engaged to be married. Worse yet, as she later finds out, he is engaged to an old college adversary. Libra was quite a catch for some lucky partner – easy on the eyes, fashionably and elegantly dressed, and given to the most romantic gestures. You’d smile to find a note tucked in your pocket saying what a divine lover you were last night. You knew you were the center of Libra’s world, the sole reason for Libra’s existence. Libra was all about loving and nothing but loving, you see, in much the same way that Virgo lived to work and Cancer was totally centered on the family.

That was Libra back then, and the zodiac was a far more agreeable place for its existence. Things began to change, ever so slowly, in 1942, when Neptune moved in with Libra. Oh, at first it was idyllic – a fairy tale, Hollywood movie, happily-ever-after type of romance that thrilled Libra to the core of its being.

Libra gradually lost itself, caught up in the all-consuming presence of a soft, sensitive soulmate who admittedly wasn’t making the most of those special talents but could become somebody if Libra only found the right way to help.

Over time, Neptune’s frailties and flaws became more and more apparent. The relationship ate up more and more of Libra’s energy, but there was no leaving because Libra was totally committed. And, besides, what would people say? In those days, divorce was just not an option for Nice, Respectable People.

In 1950, Saturn came on the scene and started piling more and more responsibilities on Libra – bills to pay, standards to live up to, deadlines to meet. Neptune by that time was too depressed, dysfunctional – and frankly, drunk – to carry much of the load, as well as only intermittently employed. The burdens all fell on Libra’s shoulders.

That whole era is a muddle of misery. Libra will never forget those wrenching, humiliating scenes in 1951-2 when Saturn confronted Neptune directly. At that point, Neptune – along with the partnership – completely broke down. Though it was the hardest thing Libra ever had done (up to then), Neptune was asked to leave in October of 1953.

For years afterward, Libra was too discouraged and disillusioned to even contemplate getting involved again. But you have to remember that Libra lives to love and feels incomplete without a partner. That never changes. And so in 1968, Libra fell head over heels with Uranus, a younger but more exciting romantic prospect than had come along in years.

Uranus had panache, charisma, and an avant-garde style that was utterly impossible to resist. Libra had always preferred intelligent companions, and didn’t mind a heated discussion so long as both points of view were considered. Uranus was possessed of a dazzling intellect and a unique viewpoint, though outspokenly scornful of others who weren’t quite so advanced in their thinking.

Then, too, there was the challenge of perpetual courtship. Uranus could be very there, 100% present one day and then suddenly disappear for months on end with no explanation. Oh, Uranus was up front about not believing in commitment, but nobody had ever been able to resist Libra’s charm and glamour, so Libra was confident it would work out.

This off again, on again affair lasted until 1975, kept alive by explosive breakups and sudden, whirlwind reunions. It was nothing if not romantic, and Libra secretly enjoyed the intervals of being single and not having to adapt to Uranus’ quirky, erratic lifestyle and forceful opinions.

Besides, Libra’s carnal needs were being met by a covert relationship with a married lover once Pluto showed up in 1971. No one knew about it because Libra cannot tolerate scandal or looking bad.

Pluto pursued Libra, who was slowly, unwillingly seduced into seamy yet steamy couplings whenever Pluto was available. As ambivalent as Libra was about being used as a sexual convenience rather than treated as a treasured partner, the intense passion that never waned kept the relationship going for years.

Saturn returned in 1980 and started nagging Libra about respectability, financial security and the need to find a more permanent arrangement to sustain Libra in those fast-approaching senior years. Then, too, Pluto died in 1984, along Libra’s capacity to believe in a lifelong, committed relationship based on true love and devotion.

Libra has never been the same since, though the charm and style remains and Libra is as attractive as ever. There are lovers and probably always will be, but Libra doesn’t really believe love will last. The romantic game is played half-heartedly, with one eye on an escape route in case things aren’t as good as they look on the surface.

Saturn’s reappearance last October made Libra very sad – maybe even clinically depressed. The relentless progression of years, even with the aid of cosmetic surgery, makes it so very hard to look good, and those scanty, frankly sexual modern styles just aren’t appropriate on someone Libra’s age.

Being alone has taken its toll – it would be so good to have a companion right there at home without making such an effort all the time. Not to mention that sharing the bills and medical insurance costs with someone would be a relief. So, yeah, Libra is depressed and worried.

Being a Libra in 2010 is hell. We don’t know the real Libra today, only the frantic, people-pleasing Libra that has evolved since the 1940s. You would have been totally enamored of the charming, loving Libra of a more spacious, gracious yesteryear – one of the highlights of the zodiac, and a joy to be around.

Saturn Responds

Excuse me, but you’re not getting an accurate picture here. I’m Saturn, and it’s only fair for me to be able to tell my side of the story. You’re making me out to be the bad guy that comes around every 29 or 30 years to make Libra’s life miserable. You make it sound like all I do is make demands, criticize lovers, and generally put a damper on relationships.

I’d like to point out that the last couple of times I came around, I was the voice of sanity when Libra was involved with thoroughly undesirable partners. In the 1940s, it was that loser Neptune that never carried its own weight. And in the mid-1980s, it was that seamy Pluto that was just out for sex and not for commitment. Neither one of them treated Libra right. It was never the equal partnership Libra deserved. And Libra couldn’t seem to set any limits, so I had to be the one to do it.

So now another full cycle has gone by, and Libra’s not getting any younger. It’s time for Libra to take a good look at what love is all about and learn to set some boundaries. Since the last time I was here, I’ve gotten certified as a life coach, and so Libra came to consult me about how to have a more mature and satisfying relationship. We’re working together, and in our sessions, we’re looking back at these past affairs to see why they were so tempting.

Mistakes are only bad if you never learn anything from them – better late than never – and Libra’s ready to learn some new ways of connecting now. I’m feeling good about what’s happening, and so is Libra. I’m cautiously optimistic about the outcome. A mature relationship can be the best one of all.

Too frequently in popular culture, Lilith has been feared as some kind of “man-hating baby-eating succubus” and misunderstood as an archetype that only applies to women. However, Lilith’s energy, while raw and sometimes sinister, is hardly completely malevolent, and in truth has a much more universal relevance. The energy of Lilith is being reexamined not just in a broad cultural context, but also in astrological application.

Lilith first gained attention in the sky in the late 19th century, when a German scientist proposed that there might be a second Moon in Earth’s orbit; this second Moon was later called Lilith, or Black Moon Lilith. Because Black Moon Lilith is a hypothetical Moon, many astrologers do not avail themselves of her – and historically, when they have, they’ve fallen back on tropes dictated by patriarchy: “Lilith for a woman symbolizes her destructive tendencies; Lilith for a man symbolizes how he deals with women in power.” Recently, however, more astrologers are beginning to abandon this static approach and utilize the (very timely) egalitarian potential of Lilith, which deals not only with breaking down gender constructs but with accessing a part of us that is powerful and bloodthirsty, which many of us deliberately make inaccessible. Unlike Pluto – which deals with dark matter that can be harnessed to an extent but is still largely out of our control – Lilith and all she embodies are very much within our control: some of us suppress it, some of us overextend it, and some of us are unaware we even have it. Lilith is our drive to get what we want and deserve no matter what; conversely, she is also the very real and very human power we have to hurt and destroy.

Understanding the role Lilith plays in your natal chart and understanding the role you play in your social context enrich one another. Lilith as archetype has loaded connotations for women. According to the mythology, she refused to be Adam’s sexual subordinate, for which she was banished from Eden and replaced with the more submissive Eve. She is exactly what women in most societies are instructed, admonished, shamed and threatened not to be. For many women, acknowledging that they have Lilith-esque impulses is difficult and dangerous enough; harnessing them into a constructive outlet is harder still. It would also behoove men to examine how Lilith affects them. In general, men have been socialized towards violence in a more Martian-Plutonian way: going to war, dividing and conquering, searching and destroying, all in pursuit of ultimate power. When this is not possible on a large scale, some men do the next best thing, which is to apply the vocabulary of war and domination to one’s immediate environment and those closest to them. This latter application is the territory of Lilith.

A relationship of any kind is a balance of power. In intimate relationships, the shift of the balance can one of the most exciting parts; however, it becomes destructive when the shift comes at the expense of one partner. Looking at the sign and house of Black Moon Lilith in your natal chart (as well as any major aspects to other planets or angles) shows you a continuum of behaviors that can either empower you to feel like an equal in a relationship or to make emotional mincemeat out of your partner or yourself. A woman with Black Moon Lilith in Aries in her 12th House, for instance, may likely have very strong opinions but will train herself to suppress them for fear of being seen as a “harpy,” a “castrating bitch,” or any of the other choice euphemisms for a woman who has an opinion or speaks above a whisper for any reason. Her lack of assertiveness can hurt and ultimately disempower her, especially in a relationship where she may defer to her partner even if doing so goes against what she actually feels or believes.

A man with Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn in his 1st House may feel that despite how hard he works or tries to prove himself, he does not get the respect and recognition he deserves from his peers, or at least what he has come to expect that he deserves, and he could attempt to reclaim some of his authority by brusquely assuming the dominant role in his relationship, to the point of controlling his partner.

The shadow sides of Lilith thrive in prescribed gender roles like acidophilus in yogurt. But once we deconstruct these shadows, a whole new context for understanding and utilizing Lilith opens up to us. The woman who has been taught that impassioned expression of strong opinions is “unbecoming” to women can learn that she has the right to express her needs. The man who feels innately entitled to authority can learn that respect is earned. With these realizations, healthier and more constructive patterns can take shape, and the balance of power in their relationship can be leveled to where both partners feel like full and equal participants.

Lilith is inescapable, but she is not uncontrollable. Being able to face her – and further, to hold yourself accountable for the hurt you are able to cause – makes you that much more empowered to become an instrument of inspiration for real depth and understanding.

We don’t know a lot about Sally and Gillian’s parents, except that true to the curse, their father dies – and their mother does as well, when the girls are young … “from a broken heart.” Thus, the girls are sent to live with their eccentric aunts, Frances and Jet, practicing witches, who raise them with equal parts magical training and free-spirited thinking, where they have chocolate cake for breakfast and never have to brush their teeth. The price, however, for this magical childhood is steep, and Sally especially feels keenly the ostracisms of the people of the small town where they live. With the abiding pain of losing her parents and the social isolation caused by her birthright, Sally decides to cast a spell so she could never really fall in love, choosing an impossible combination of traits that no man could have.

Her aunts however, cannot bear to see Sally so unhappy, and cast a spell so she would fall in love. Marrying, Sally has two children – girls, of course – and then true to the curse, her husband dies an untimely death. Sally is forced by circumstances and finances to move back with her aunts, but she warns them, “My girls will not learn magic. I want them to have a normal childhood.”

The natives with Pluto in the Eighth face the same quandaries, the same dilemmas. The Eighth is a house of deep and abiding secrets, of seemingly magical connections, representing the thin veil that separates this world from the next. It is the place of alternate Universes, or as the Celts believed, the home of the Sidthe (pronounced shee), the land where time runs different from ours, where once entered, you are forever changed. The people who have strong Eighth House, Scorpio or Plutonic influences feel keenly that there is much more to the Universe than our dimension reveals. They feel the cold burning heat of dimensions that, if expressed, threaten to tear apart our neat and orderly three-dimensional existence. For this reason, these influences leave a mark on their soul, resulting in a certain wariness about the circumstances of their lives. This is the source of their intensity and their driving need to understand the mysteries of the Universe.

[Movie Spoiler Alert!] In the movie, Gillian, bored with small town life, moves away, drifting away her life in endless parties, and ultimately in a relationship with an abusive man. In distress, she calls for her sister, who ends up being kidnapped along with Gillian by the violent, disturbed and alcoholic Jimmy. To escape, Sally spikes Jimmy’s tequila with belladonna, but in her haste, she overdoses the liquor and Jimmy dies. Frantic and fearful, they drive Jimmy’s body back to the homestead and attempt a forbidden spell to reanimate him. Sally warns that this is dangerous, that Jimmy would come back as something dark and unnatural. Gillian replies that Jimmy was already dark and unnatural, so it couldn’t make much of a difference. They bring Jimmy back to life, but he comes back twice as violent and dangerous. Sally is forced to kill Jimmy a second time as he is choking Gillian, demanding that she become his wife. But like most abusive men, Jimmy isn’t so easily dispatched, and his spirit – made more malevolent and potent by the abortive transformation spell – haunts the women and eventually possesses Gillian, torturing and slowly killing her.

In the meantime, a law enforcement officer shows up in the town, looking for Jimmy as a suspect in the murder of another woman. Taken aback by the strangeness of the reaction of the townspeople to the two women – and by the weird reactions of the sisters to his questions – he begins to realize that Jimmy might be victim of a crime himself. After seeing the potent shade of Jimmy in possessed Gillian’s bedroom, he suspects the sisters murdered him. Not so coincidentally, this officer possesses all the strange traits of the true love that Sally conjured in her childhood spell. The draw between Sally and the officer becomes very apparent, and both are confused. Sally reveals that she made the spell that brought him to her, and he reveals he wished for someone like Sally himself.

In the meantime, Gillian becomes sicker as the spirit of Jimmy sucks away her life. The aunts decide the only way to save her is to form a coven, and Sally invites the women of the town who rejected her as a child to help. She finds out that the women were not quite so unaccepting of her as she imagined, but the initial attempts of the coven fail, and Jimmy is not dispatched. Sally realizes that she must draw on all her magic to save her sister, and to do so she must accept everything that she is – magic, birthright and all – to do so. But can Sally do this given how much she feels that magic has mucked up her life?

Pluto in the Eighth house individuals are faced with this question as well. Joni Mitchell sings in the song Hejira, “We all live so close to that line and so far from satisfaction.” This is the challenge of Pluto in the Eighth house, finding a way to cross the line that will enhance rather than mess up their life. Seemingly self-assured, confident and in control, Rick Blaine was the master of his corner of the Universe – a “gin joint,” as he described it – where Casablanca’s international stable of war refugees gathered to wait out the onerous process of obtaining an exit visa. “Everyone goes to Rick’s,” proclaimed Captain Renault, local legal authority of the town, he himself a regular customer. People knew where they stood with Rick. “I don’t stick my neck out for anyone,” Rick said more than once. Coolly distant, no one had a hold on Blaine’s affections. When a girlfriend – who drank Rick’s liquor generously before she saw him – demanded to know where he was the night before, he replied that he didn’t remember that far back. When she asked if she would see him that night, he replied that he didn’t make plans that far in advance. When she fell apart emotionally making a scene, he had an employee whisk her away from the bar. Affair over. Anyone who has ever has loved a Pluto in the Seventh native and not engaged his or her heart has felt such a bitter sting at the end of the relationship. Didn’t he or she ever care?

Such a question is pointless with a Pluto in Seventh individual. Like all Pluto-ruled positions when it comes to love, Pluto in the Seventh finds the process of loving someone so intense that the rest of the world and all its players seem like a lifeless shell of reality. Long before some luckless human falls for the charms of a Pluto in the Seventh person, they have given their hearts to an impossible love. Even after the relationship ends for one reason or another, the memory of the relationship takes on a life of its own, twisting the motives and purposes of the Pluto in the Seventh individual. Rick cast off his freedom-fighting ways after his Paris affair ended, and wandered down to Casablanca, where he established the Café and started a life that is starkly reminiscent of the Lord of the Underworld, Hades. All manner of seedy activities happened in the glitter world of the Café: sex, drunkenness, gambling, theft, black market activity and visa scams occurred under Rick’s watch, but he acted like nothing bad happened – just people enjoying a drink. In fact, the Café was Rick’s personal torture chamber, where he could compare the suffering in his heart with the suffering of others and still come out on top. Nothing compared to his pain, not even that of young women forced to trade in their virtue for exit papers for a safer life. Even when visa peddler Ugarte was shot to death by the police in front of the Café’s customers, Rick proclaimed, “I’m sorry for the little excitement, you can all go back to having a good time.”

Rick’s world and his careful reconstruction of his life falls to pieces when his Paris love, Ilsa, walks in the Café on the arms of the one man Rick respects, a world renowned freedom fighter. Not only was she with someone else, she was with someone “better” than him. We watch as Rick drinks himself almost into oblivion, while his piano player, Sam, cajoles him to go home. “There is no reason to stay,“ says Sam. “She’ll be here,” declares Blaine, certain as any Pluto in Seventh person would be that his obsession is hers, too. Indeed, she does arrive. What follows is a scene reminiscent of Nickelback’s song, This Is How You Remind Me. Ilsa tries to explain what happened. Getting all Neptunian on Rick, she starts, “Let me tell you a story….“ But Pluto trumps Neptune every time. “Let me tell you a story,” Rick cuts in, “of a man waiting at the railroad station with a stupid look on his face, because his guts were just kicked in.” Though she walks out angry and disappointed, you just know that this was not the last of the story, and with Pluto in the Seventh, it never is – unless the native follows the only escape plan possible.

Though it is easy to glibly say that Pluto is the planet of transformation, the actual process is painful and torturous. Whenever Pluto is involved, the Lord of the Underworld demands that you relive your angst over and over again until you’ve had enough of it and want things to change. For some people with Pluto in the Seventh, even though a memory is all they have, they’ll cling to the memory of that lost love like it was the only thing that matters. Make no mistake; this is an addiction as potent as any drug. There is only one solution: Release.

We do not see Rick’s moment of actual transformation. Maybe it was in the hinted-at last night of passion shared. Or maybe it was when Ilsa submitted to her feelings and asked Rick to think for them both. One or both moments of power gave Rick the ultimate momentum to change the fate of not just three people, but perhaps the fate of the world. If Rick ran off with Ilsa, would it shatter the man, Ilsa’s freedom-fighting husband, on whom so many people depended on for inspiration in one of the world’s darkest hours? And how would Rick and Ilsa ultimately feel about an ill-gotten life together?

“It doesn’t take much,” said Rick to Ilsa, “to see that problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this world.” In looking beyond himself and his pain, Rick was able to let go and move on into a new life free of the emotional shackles of his past. And so too must a Pluto in Seventh person. He or she must ultimately realize that “a kiss is just a kiss.”
