Love Horoscope for the Week of May 8

This week’s major cosmic events consist of a few good but fleeting transits, and one big stinker right in the middle of them. This is one of those times when it pays to be aware of the conditions and keep them in mind (for better and for worse) when you’re dealing with the people in your life.

The early part of the week is dominated by Sun trine Pluto (exact on Tuesday). Watch for the Big Egos you have to deal with to get slightly bigger than usual, but for the most part this is a fairly pleasant aspect. Need a little pick-me-up, or feel like buying yourself something you don’t quite need but will make you happy? Go right ahead!

Please, don’t panic if I tell you that there is a Full Moon in Scorpio on Wednesday. People like to get bent out of shape over a Full Moon (which admittedly can be edgy and lead to emotional outbursts, but is more of a minor glitch than a big disaster), and for some people any sentence that includes the word “Scorpio” is unsettling. Despite all that, I actually like the look of this Full Moon. It features a helpful Mercury-Uranus aspect (see below) and happens under the influence of Mars trine Jupiter (in effect all this week), so at the very least if you do end up losing your cool with someone, it will probably be in an efficient and surgical manner. Here’s hoping that whomever it is you flip out at is asking for it half as much as you think at the time.

Mercury, having recently emerged from its retrograde, is ready to shine and gets a couple of really helpful aspects this week. Any intellectual pursuits or anything involving communications or fine detail work will be favored, so make a point of using your brain this week and you’ll be rewarded. Mercury conjunct Uranus (exact on Wednesday) is a great time for coming up with brilliant solutions to the things that have been standing in your way, and for finding new ways to get your message across to others. At almost the same time, but exact the next day, Mercury trine Saturn can help those new flashes of genius become practical and get lasting results.

So sure… this all sounds good so far. What’s the catch? Thursday brings us Mars square Neptune, which hovers over the entire week like a big delusional cloud. Should you stand up for yourself with the boss? Should you confront a loved one about a long-standing issue between the two of you? Should you fall madly in bed with that charming stranger you just met? Whatever your answer is to any or all of those questions, it will be easy to make the wrong decision for the wrong reasons. Despite all that clever Mercury stuff happening this week, your judgement may be off when it comes to your ambitions and your drives. This aspect also comes with a seductive “what’s the worst that could happen?” kind of charm, which doesn’t help with making wise choices at all. If you’re dating, Friday night’s Moon in Sagittarius is likely to make the chips fall on the reckless side of this whole equation. The lesson here? Use your Mercury — your brain — and avoid the worst possible consequences.
