Love Horoscope for the Week of May 22

The week begins in the shadow of last week’s big aspect for love, Venus opposite Jupiter. The sometimes hard-to-fulfill romantic longings of a Venus-Jupiter aspect are fading in favor of a couple of new factors that can help you overcome the obstacles that kept you from finding the love that you want and need — provided you can deal with the new and different (yet at least equally frustrating) Mars situation poised to take off this weekend.

Last week’s longings gain new depth and power this week, as the major aspect in effect is Venus square Pluto, which is exact on Thursday but influences things all week long. Think of Venus as not just “love,” but the urge to have sweetness in your life in general. When that principle is combined with the all-or-nothing demands of Pluto in a pleasant and civilized aspect, like a trine or sextile, it can be difficult to control that urge for something sweet even if you know you should be controlling yourself. But when the Venus principle gets a poke from the square with Pluto? It’s like being on a protein diet and having to fight the urge to bash someone with a brick to get a hold of a cupcake. If your love life has been stuck in a holding pattern with someone of late, this could be the time to make a breakthrough — or possibly break a bone. Choose wisely.

Maybe what you need is a whole new fresh start with your love life, or with some part of your life in general. Astrologically, there’s no better time to dedicate yourself to a new goal or to new ambitions than a New Moon. Thursday’s New Moon in Gemini is an ideal time to set out in a new direction, especially with matters that requires an extra degree of reason and logic.

“Choosing wisely” is always a good idea, and that sort of thing is the domain of Mercury. Unfortunately, that planet isn’t getting a lot of help this week. Mercury quincunx Jupiter (exact on Saturday) may give you a lot of really bright and innovative ideas… but good luck with them being of much practical use. Not that any new ideas you have will be completely useless — in fact there are some opportunities for real brilliance here. Just prepare yourself for having to do a lot of hard work to make anything truly useful come of it.

So with all these strong emotional impulses with less-than-ideal logical control over it all? With the Moon in Cancer for Date Night on Saturday and Sunday, you may find that emotions are overwhelming your logical capacities… so why not just give in to the vibe? After all, a little defensiveness (which Moon in Cancer excels at) might make for good strategy: although the aspect isn’t exact until late Sunday/early Monday, Mars opposite Saturn will likely be making people’s moods irritable and unreasonable.
