Juno in aspect to the planets

April 23, 2009 by Julie Demboski

Zeus and Hera“Juno in aspect” is the fourth in a five-part series by Julie Demboski on Juno, the “marriage asteroid.” In the first part, she defines Juno. In the second, she describes each sign placement of Juno, differentiated by gender. In the third, she interprets the expression of Juno in the houses.

Don’t know where Juno is in your chart? Find out how to get it for free.

An aspect between Juno and one of the personal planets or the lights brings her influence directly to the personal Self, while an aspect with an outer planet gives Juno broad effect in the psyche, perhaps subconsciously, and opens the door for the individual to carry her Archetype. Contact is more important than the kind of aspect; hard or soft, it’s the awareness of Juno energies that counts.

Paired with the Sun, Juno becomes an identity issue. For a woman, that likely plays out through her role in life and the power it does or doesn’t afford her. For a man, the women with whom he partners throughout life (and he may actually need a partner, to feel “himself”) will be vital to identity formation, as well as in realizing his Soul Purpose.

The Moon brings empowerment issues into line with emotional and mothering ones, both received and given, and may give the mother (and possibly all women viewed in a non-sexual capacity) a Juno-like role.

Mercury marries communication with empowerment, and effectiveness levels are intertwined in a female chart. For a man, contact implies that empowered women (or the mate) communicate for him, that communication is an ongoing issue between the spouses, or that he may find communications from strong women threatening.

With Venus, Juno links empowerment to the ideal way a woman sees herself in the world, and manifests at least in part through beauty and aesthetics. A man will link empowerment (or the lack of it) to his image of the ideal woman.

Juno aspecting Mars links empowerment both to the ability to act effectively and to the sex drive. It also colors a woman’s ideal image of a man, and a man’s ideal image of himself.

Jupiter plus Juno can follow the blueprint of the myth — remember that Jupiter is analogous to Zeus — with a long honeymoon period related to Jupiter in the chart followed by repeated “infidelities.” Struggle is almost guaranteed at some point; empowerment issues can be hugely exaggerated, and may be something one is continually trying to educate the Self or others about.

Juno coupled with Saturn may signal repression of empowerment in a woman, while for a man it suggests suppression of the mate. Or one may take on the role of the crone, in a woman, or the patriarch, in a man, no matter the chronological age.

Juno and Uranus in contact brings a high degree of uniqueness and individuality to the expression of empowerment. This contact can also foster rebellion against the role of wife or the rejection of a power role. The same is true for a man in relation to his mate.

With Neptune, Juno may be ungraspable, with empowerment staying just out of reach, or it could signal the taking on of an inspired mantle of responsibility. In a man’s chart, this suggests he may not know what an empowered woman looks like!

Allied with Pluto, Juno in aspect unites the need for empowerment with the desire for power, with a predictable spectrum of results. In either sex, this may cause the urge to destroy empowered females, and can bring a taste for the dominatrix!

  1. Julie, do you use a tighter orb for Juno because it’s an asteroid?

  2. Julie says:

Hi Jeffrey, good question–I should’ve included info on orbs, so thank you for bringing it up. Yes, I use a tighter than average orb with asteroids, typically no more than 5 or 6 degrees, though there are exceptions, such as involvement in a stellium, where we get a kind of cascade effect, and it fits to consider energies meshed that might otherwise technically be too far apart. It depends, too, on what the asteroid is aspecting; I allow a larger orb to a major planet because the planet’s influence seems to ‘reach out’ and include smaller bodies–but between two asteroids I think the aspects need to be assessed under a more narrow orb–and with angles, again, wider with the ASC and MC, less so with IC and DSC.

  3. jane says:

Hi–what about Juno aspects to the angles and nodes? I have it in Sagittarius
conjuncting my IC and squaring my ascendent and north node in Virgo–

  4. Julie says:

    Hi Jane,

Juno aspecting an angle simply unites the issues of empowerment with what the angle represents-so in your case, a conjunction to the IC says how you feel about yourself deep inside, and/ or how you feel about yourself within the family unit, are inseparable from your Self-empowerment concepts-and a square to the ASC says these ideas conflict with the persona you offer on first meeting and as a social ‘mask’-so there’s likely some disparity between how you really feel about yourself and the issue of empowerment, and how you present yourself to others in empowerment terms. The dissonance is likely rooted in either an early environment that didn’t support your own ideas of Self-empowerment, or in an empowerment model within the family that you for some reason concluded was not in your best interests to show the world.

  5. Christine says:

I know that when it comes to asteroids, a tighter orb must be considered. From what I understand, my Pluto conjuncts my Lilith by an orb of 2, Juno conjuncts my Lilith by an orb of 3. My Pluto opposes my Sun by a wider orb of 5. I identify with feeling sexually empowered, but I’m still trying to wrap my head around the idea of wanting to “destroy” empowered females. It makes sense to me, though. I’d like to think of myself as an powerful, competent woman. Ideally, I would want to see all women empowered and confident — breaking out of gender schemas and seeking out opportunities that have been available to our male counterparts for decades (if we so desire). But I have to admit, and maybe this is just because I am not as evolved, it is competition with females that kind of bring out that Plutonic energy in me. Competition with men kind of bring that out of me too, but …not as strongly.

  6. Julie D says:

    Hi Christine,

That ambivalent energy you describe as Plutonian might actually be seated in Juno. Remember that Juno’s wrath is aimed at the other women who threaten her marriage (and consequently threaten her place at the head of the social order), as they attract the attentions of her husband (and competition in general is involved here, if we think of the attentions of Zeus as any desireable commodity that you see others as rivals for). And, considering the placement of your Sun to Pluto, the urge to destroy might be much better thought of as the instinct to protect the Self–and once you understand that the existence of and prosperity of others isn’t taking from you, you may be able to embrace that Plutonian power in a positive re-birth of Sun energy that could bring Soul manifestation to a new (and probably amazing) level.

just out of curiosity, ive been doing some reading and would like to get some insight on how to read juno opposite mc and pallas conjunct moon n venus w a sextile to jupiter, an inconjunction to saturn n uranus coupled by a semi square to a sun lilith and perhaps the s.node… i shall await ur reply ms.jane..

  8. SteamyWeenie says:

.. or julie. whoever wrote it.

ill b w my own friend jane if anyone needs me… mary jane… get it? :D

  9. Julie D says:

Well, Steamy, you’ll be waiting a long time, since I don’t take assignments in the comments section. I welcome legitimate questions, but will not be providing personal natal analysis here. Good luck in your search.

    Julie

  10. SteamyWeenie says:

why heavens no. i wouldnt try to sneak a reading out of you even if my name was dubya.

in all seriousness though, hows juno in that aspect to pallas that conjs mc?

  11. Julie D says:

    In all seriousness, weenie, no–

  12. apparently, one must put one’s foot down several times…

  13. Jodie Lewin says:

Hi Julie, thank you for your interesting take on Juno. I haven’t thought about her in terms of empowerment before so it’s been enlightening. What do you think Juno conjunct the South Node (Leo, 9th house but close to MC) would mean in empowerment terms? I’ve tended to interpret this as meaning that marriage or long term partnership may not be part of my journey this time around (I’m 38 and single!) but maybe that’s too simplistic?! Thanks

  14. Julie D says:

    Hi Jodie,

Being destined to be single isn’t a bad guess, but it’s not where I would go with this–if Juno/SN is within 5 degrees of the MC, I’d see this as Self-empowerment through the career, with the advantage of being able to bring a lot of what is likely instinctive experience to the effort. There appears to be a mandate to ’shine’ (Leo) and to reach out (9th House), so my thought is that you are perhaps meant to pour a lot of energy into the career, and thereby learn how communications and connections can serve to move you forward in life(NN in 3rd). Juno for women is about Self-empowerment within a social framework (of which marriage is a part), while for men it much more signifies partnership attitudes and expectations. Good luck, Jodie!

    Julie

  15. Jodie Lewin says:

Thanks a lot Julie. I like your take on it much better than mine! I can definitely relate to your interpretation. Juno/SN are 4 & 5 degrees from the MC respectively and I certainly need work that allows me to shine in some way and to reach out and connect/communicate with people (I also have Sun in Leo in the 9th ruling my MC!). I’m just about to start a new fundraising/public relations position in a not for profit environment organisation which I’m very excited about. A huge part of the role will be connecting and collaborating with people along with lots of travel in my home state (very Aquarius in the 3rd house!). Interestingly enough, the job came out of the blue via an ex-colleague on the day of the recent lunar eclipse in Aquarius which took place exactly across my nodal axis!! Don’t you love it when astrology and life events line up so beautifully?! Anyway, thanks again Julie for your wonderfully put interpretation :)

  16. Julie D says:

Thank you, Jodie, and many congratulations on your new opportunity!
