Creating a dialogue around horoscopes

August 7, 2008 by kishner

I started featuring Michelle Piller’s weekly love horoscopes a few months ago, and I was excited about the prospect of having as rich a “comments experience” as we have for the posts written by myself and guest bloggers like Beth Turnage and Laura F. Walton. However, that hasn’t happened, and I’m wondering why.

Unlike most astrology websites that feature horoscopes, every single ’scope here is comments-enabled. The blog format encourages dialogue, and I’d think readers would want to share about their experiences on a week-to-week basis, relating their love lives to what the horoscopes are saying.

The more astrologically-sophisticated readers can share how the Saturn-Uranus opposition or an eclipse touches their chart, but many readers just know their Sun and Rising signs. Reading the ’scope for your Rising sign can be pretty accurate, since it touches on where the transiting planets actually are in your natal chart.

So, what I can do to facilitate dialogue around the horoscopes?

  • Is the “Post a Comment” link too far down the page (that is, below the 12 zodiac buttons) for most readers to notice it?
  • Is there something about the layout or formatting of the page that discourages commenting?
  • What do you think of the horoscopes in general?

Please also let me know which ’scopes you read. General refers to the horoscope featured on this blog every Sunday/Monday. Sun and Rising are those you click through to read.

UPDATE: I’ve added a “Conversations” folder to the horoscopes widget (which you’ll notice in the right sidebar and which you can add to your own blog). If you click on “Conversations” and then the Sign of your choice, you’ll see comments that have been recently made on those horoscopes.

    a jupiter question:
if Jupiter is what you are good at and what comes easy to you
    and
the 7th house represents traits you lack and seek out in a partner
how can I understand natal Jupiter (in Leo) in the 7th house?????
and to confuse things further Jupiter is conjunct venus is this chart…

I actually never realized that I could post a comment.

Jeff, since you asked, I’m assuming you want honest feedback. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but I have actually never found her horoscopes inspiring enough to write any comment, except that one time when she had written that there had never been more serenity, the week of Saturn-Mars conjunction. I found that statement so absurd that I just couldn’t resist commenting on it.

  5. Jeffrey Kishner says:

@shygirl, thanks for your honesty. I actually like her ’scopes.

I just don’t have that much ever to say about weekly horoscopes. Either it pans out for the week, or it doesn’t. I can’t really yak about the psychology of them, so I’m not compelled to comment.
