Leo Solar Eclipse: How Are You Attracting?
July 30, 2008 by Jeffrey Kishner
What makes you special? What is it that you do (or how you are) that makes you glow?
Whether you’re single or in a relationship (or more than one!), you want to feel attractive. To attract is to bring attention your way. There are ways to attract through changing your physical appearance (cosmetics, diet, attire), but really, it’s more about the vibe you give off. Sexy is an energy, not how much skin you show. You might have a picture-perfect bod, but if you have no zest to your personality, people will tire of you fast. There are always new starlets, but it’s the ones with with true talent who succeed. And if not talent, a certain special something — an “it” factor — that draws people towards them.
That’s the power of the Sun, ruler of Leo. It’s that part of you that people can’t take their eyes off of. Your creative energy. Your playfulness. Even your dramatic entrances. “I have arrived!”
You don’t need to be a Leo to emit sunshine. We all have Leo in our charts. Even if none of your planets are in Leo, this sign is on the cusp of a house, or at the very least, intercepted within one. During this eclipse, you will have the opportunity to make a new start in the area of life governed by this house, and the themes associated with whatever planets the eclipse aspects will be highlighted. The solar eclipse is a special type of New Moon, when the Sun and Moon are conjunct in the sky, close to the Nodes of the Moon. A New Moon signals beginnings, a time to plant a seed that will grow over the next year. The Moon’s proximity to the Nodes adds a fated, karmic quality to this celestial event.
As this is a relationship blog, let’s look at how the eclipse might impact your love life. The Sun-Moon conjunction will occur at 9 degrees Leo this Friday at 6:13 am Eastern Daylight Time.
- If the eclipse falls in your Seventh House, it signals a new beginning in your relationship life, or for your significant other. If you’re single, a new person could come into your life. He or she is likely to be — if not a Leo — then someone with a strong sense of authority or presence. Someone who can bring drama, play, life to your life. If you’re already with someone, you have the opportunity to reinvigorate your relationship.
- If the eclipse falls in your Fifth House, your romantic life may be stimulated. This is fortuitous for people who are dating or are looking for no-strings-attached sex. If you just want to have a good time, make use of this energy.
- The eclipse in aspect to Venus or the ruler of your Seventh House will signal the opportunity for a fresh start in your love life. (Or possibly your lover’s life.)
- The eclipse in aspect to your Sun or Moon could indicate something happening in your husband or wife’s life, or in your relationship with them. This eclipse will closely impact Leos born between July 30 and August 6.
If the eclipse makes a hard aspect to an important point in your chart, there could a conflict preventing you from initiating the new beginning you desire. A soft aspect suggests the eclipse will support you in your growth.
How to measure progress
Any time a transiting planet makes a hard angle to 9 Leo over the next year, this eclipse point will be stimulated. If the eclipse is touching your chart in a significant way, look to these times as triggers to further your progress along.
The following planets will make a square to the Leo Solar Eclipse point throughout autumn:
- October 1 – Venus in Scorpio
- October 18 – Mars in Scorpio (this is an energizing planet)
- October 28 – 5 Scorpio New Moon
- November 1 – Sun in Scorpio
- November 10 – Mercury in Scorpio
The opening square is significant, because this angle spurs one on towards taking action. Right now, the effects of the solar eclipse may be subtle, but come three months from now, you will feel motivated to work hard to make your dreams come true.

1. If the eclipse falls in your 1st house (@9 degrees Leo), does it also affect the 2nd house over the next year, because Leo is on the cusp of the second house or just the 1st house or both houses?
2. Doesn’t the Moon also eclipse the Mercury shortly after it eclipses the Sun that day? What are the implications of that, if any?
Thanks….:-)
My eighth house is mostly in Leo along with the cusp of my seventh and my Mars is there too. I’m already in a relationship that just started a few months ago and so far there’s been very little conflict. I’m wondering if any of this means some strife for me?
For me, the eclipse falls in the second half of my sixth house. However, Leo is the sign on the cusp of my seventh house. The eclipse is conjunct my sun (I’m a Leo) and opposing my moon and ascendant. It squares my Mars, trines my Neptune, and semi-sextiles my Venus. It’s sextile my Pluto. I suppose I am in for big things. All of this while I’m in the tail end of Saturn conjunct my natal Venus in my seventh house. Things are heavy.
@shygirl – 1=no, just the first house. 2=none that I’m aware of, but I haven’t looked into it. I’m not sure how important “occultation” is with a Moon-Mercury conjunction.
@scorpionights – only if your Mars is close to 9 Leo. The eclipse there in general could move things, but a conjunction to Mars would definitely bring on strife.
@selassie – good luck!
Most of my first house consists of Leo, too, like Shygirl’s. I’ve certainly been Leo-ish lately, much more so that usual.
This Leo series falling into one’s first house should have everything to do with individuality and self-expression…for better or worse.
As an example, on one of the boards I sit on, an issue arose last week that boiled down to a judgment-call vote. While ordinarily I might have simply let everyone make their own calls, and voted my conscience when the time came, for some reason I felt compelled to make speeches. Un-asked-for speeches, in public and in private. Big Leonine speeches about greater duty, larger responsibility to the organization and to the commnunity, and big abstract things like Truth, Justice, and the American Way.
Of course, half of them hate me now, and the other half just want me to shut up so we can go eat dinner. Even I want me to shut up so we can go eat dinner!
The solar eclipse of the 1st will oppose my 7th house Aquarius Venus, so I expect to be at odds with a few close friends, and possibly accumulate a few enemies (I’m moving right along.) It may impact my love life, but I can’t really see how, considering the fact that I don’t have one.
Then again, eclipses are unpredictable and subtle, so we’ll see….
ok. we chose the eclipse to transfer embryos into a surrogate and are hoping it was a good decision. the eclipse is exactly trine my sun and forms a close grand trine (houses 2, 6, 10) with my mars (7th house ruler). it is also exactly semi-square my Pluto. Venus will be exactly conjunct my moon that day and exact sesqui my sun. also Juno/BML will tightly conjunct my mars and exact quintile Jupiter/Uranus. Meanwhile, I’m getting pounded by Neptune, exact/tight transits to my moon, venus, saturn and ascendant.
the eclipse is opposite my husband’s venus/mars conj. (mars exact), tight square his sun (which exactly conjuncts my juno) exact sesqui his merc. (7th house ruler) and exact semisquare to his exact jupiter/I.C. conj. He also has been undergoing a couple of Neptune transits.
Lastly, both of our part of fortunes fall in the 5th house, his conjunct the eclipse in Leo and mine an exact inconjunct the eclipse in Pisces. our composite has moon exactly conjunct the descendant so we really really really want a child to nurture together.
Light a candle and say a prayer!!
Oh wow, Wollnut…I’ve never heard of using an eclipse like that before, and it sounds like a brilliant idea.
Leo all around, really– Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Venus, plus you still have the Pluto/Sagittarius trine (by sign, anyway.) Plus, Uranus is in Pisces– the planet of unconventional medical procedures in a very fertile water sign– and is still broadly sextile by sign to Pisces’ co-ruler Jupiter. The key planets seem to be getting along quite nicely, for the moment.
Best of luck to all of you!!
good luck, wollnut!
Hi,
I have Venus at 24 degrees Leo in the 2nd house and Jupiter at 7 degrees Aquarius in the 7th. I was wondering how the upcoming eclipse might affect me…
Thanks
Hello Mr Kishner,
Could you please shed some light into possible areas of my life that the eclipse could affect?
I have Venus in Leo (in house 11) at 24 degrees, and Mars in Leo (in house 10) at 14 degrees. I have Aquarius on the cusp of the 5th house at 23 degrees as well as Leo on the cusp of the 11th house at 23 degrees.
Thank you very much in advance,
Evan M.
@Evan M – the lunar eclipse will exactly oppose your Venus, bring light to relationship issues (perhaps friendships). The lunar eclipse sometimes brings separations. The solar eclipse might stimulate your Mars — perhaps giving you the impetus to take action in your career.
@aurora, the lunar eclipse will exactly oppose your Venus, probably bringing up issues around money, values or self-esteem — especially regarding how you share money with others or how much other people value you. The solar eclipse might stimulate you to expand in your relationship life, or may signify the beginning of a relationship with a Jupiterian figure (teacher, person from a different background, etc).
That was great info! thanks Mr Kishner!
The things Ive been noticing lately is that certain friendships are becoming stronger and something that Im not sure if its related to any of the ecclipses..Ive been getting a lot of female attention (much more than usual), could it be because the ruler of my Libra rising (Venus) is in Leo at 24 degrees? or because its in the 11th house of (friendships with women among other things..)
Thanks,
Evan M.
Whether you’re single or in a relationship (or more than one!), you want to feel attractive.
Uhh.. not always! Really.
Hi Jeffrey,
You say that the eclipse is in proximity to the nodes, so I assume you use a fairly wide aspect (at 8 degrees from the south node)? My Ascendant is 17 Leo and Moon is 18 Leo, which are getting the south end of the nodes – and maybe the eclipse, though a bit widely. I also have Uranus at 14 Leo, so that’s a closer aspect. It does also square my MC/IC (and progressed Sun on my IC) at 7 Tau/Sco. Since it’s well within my 12th house, gotta wonder what if anything might bubble up to the surface.
If the eclipse falls in your Fifth House, your romantic life may be stimulated. This is fortuitous for people who are dating or are looking for no-strings-attached sex. If you just want to have a good time, make use of this energy.
Tell me about it. I just started dating my astro-twin (a girl) and an old fling invited me to the museum of sex.
Go eclipse!!!!!!!!
Wow, Jeff youre really smart. thats
wonderful to see inciteful commentary
on such an important transit. thankyou. Listen, I have ascendant in
Leo 9degrees, part of a grand solar trine, sun in aries conjunct mercury,9th house
2nd leg,leo ascendant, third leg neptune in sagiatarious 5th house,0
degrees, I think it’s time to really
luanch my musical career. venus rules
my chart, conjunct midheavan(highest point.)and mars is conjunct saturn in tenth house tuarus, so venus rules 10th house.
any thoughts?
@TUU – I stand corrected. When I was writing the post, I thought of using “most of us” but I figured it’s more or less a univeral desire.
@Evan M. – the upcoming lunar eclipse exactly opposite your Venus would do it.
@leslee, by definition an eclipse is a sun-moon conjunction or oppposition within 12 degrees of the nodes. Otherwise, it’s not an eclipse. The Nodes are where the path of the Moon intersects with the ecliptic. The solar eclipse in your 12th may be subtle, you might not notice anything for a while.
@superfreak, your chart ruler is the Sun, since it rules your Leo Ascendant. Since the eclipse exactly conjoins your Asc I’d say it will be pretty significant, as this point concerns your identity, body, image … really, the point at which you came into the world.
My Mars is at 6 degrees Leo in my 8th house, and my Mercury is at 10 degrees Scorpio in my 11th house. (I also have a zero-degree Moon-Pluto conjunction in my 8th house at 15 degrees Leo. I’m wondering how the eclipse might affect me.
Eclipse is 4° away from my natal Venus at 13°Leo, and exactly squares my natal Moon at 9°Scorpio.
We’ll see …
by definition an eclipse is a sun-moon conjunction or oppposition within 12 degrees of the nodes. Otherwise, it’s not an eclipse.
Really! That somehow escaped me all these years. Thanks, that puts another spin on it!
Hi Jeffrey,
I was taking a look at my Mom’s chart and saw that she has Uranus at 10 degrees of Leo in her 10th house. Also Chiron is at 12 degrees of Aquarius in the 4th house. I’ve read that in Sabian symbols this eclipse would actually be 10 degrees of Leo, since it’s 9.1, and you round up. I don’t know enough about it to know if that’s correct or not, but regardless it seems like this eclipse should be significant. Any insights you have would be much appreciated! If anyone else can tell me what this might mean, that would be great too! I wish I was more advanced and could give her a good interpretation.
@sketchgrrl – looks like the eclipse’s square to your Mercury will be the most pronounced aspect. Prob’ly a communication problem with a friend.
@ex.blue – pls report back! I expect this one will be significant for you.
@lookingglass83 – I haven’t studied Sabian symbols. I expect your Mom might have something unexpected happen in her career, or feel moved to make a drastic change in this area of her life.
So I have Saturn in 12 degrees of Leo in my 11th house.
What does it mean if the planet of restriction is shaken up by the eclipse? More restriction? Less restriction?
@greenseavirgo, you could see it as creating structure for yourself in the collective, whether in group involvement or with friends. Saturn doesn’t always have to mean restriction.
Thanks very much, Jeffrey!
eclipsing near my ascendant (~it is 3 degree leo) but not too close for comfort and no planets in first, seventh.. this must to explain why i bought a silky in ya face magenta tank top and – BLAH. c’est fini! that was all i get. hopefully its like – wait – and the aspects will come (breathe in).
Okay if my sun is in Leo in the 8th house, what does this mean as far as the eclipse goes? How about the bf, with Leo in his 4th house?
Well, this is extremely interesting. I have the solar eclipse hitting my 7th house. I have cancer 7th house with leo intercepted, so definately 7th house it is! Its also interesting that I have been dating a cute Leo guy for the past two months and it really is going pretty well..peaceful, fun, happy, sparks…etc. The last time a solar eclipse was in my 7th house I began a heart wrenching relationship with a player. Lots of chemistry, but he didnt exactly treat me nice. So, eight years later, a few bad relationships along the way and learning to really love myself…a nice relationship! Leo solar eclipse, Leo dude…
The eclipse conjuncts my Moon at 2 degrees Leo/11th house.
August 2nd also happens to be my Mom’s birthday and the eclipse conjuncts her natal Sun/Uranus conjunction in the first house.
Our relationship has been strained since February 2001. I wonder if this will affect our relationship at all.
@Michelle, 2 degrees Leo is too far away from the eclipse at 9 Leo to be affected, in my opinion. I offer my wishes that your relationship with your mother improves.
Thanks Jeffrey. I haven’t read much about the orbs for transits (or eclipses) yet.
@ex.blue – pls report back! I expect this one will be significant for you.
I got eclipsed… in two ways.
I’ve spent the day cleaning (natal Moon in 6th HSE) the house (eclipse in 4th, sitting on the Venus), or if you want serving the common cause of our household – which is just the practical aspect.
That day my mother told me it’s time to move out and presented plans for renovating our flat in the following month.. So at first I’d have to sleep at my dad’s apartment cause of the paint job (and what not), but eventually that would grow into complete move out… She chose a subtle way this time, and dad had nothing else to do or say but to re-measure his flat the following day to see what we may organize better for my life there.
I felt a little hurt. It’s silly, I know, I lived there already alone earlier in life (as a wild student) and as much as we sometimes have hard time living with each other and as much as it really is time for me to move out, my mother saying those words was never part of the plan, I never expected her to do so cause she was always holding to me like the world will collapse if I go somewhere (which was always pissing me off, of course).
Have I mentioned mom and dad are Leo Suns (7 and 10 degrees of Leo)?
So… I’m seeing this Cappy guy and we’re slowly plowing through our third month. I don’t have to mention it’s the longest and only relationship that can actually carry that name since my last long term relationship that ended last year in March. It’s all going really nice, we’re pretty compatible in most things and neither of us cannot withhold wide smiles on our faces when ever we see each other and all of our mutual friends share the happiness of us getting together in a way “two weirdos fit together”
The night of the eclipse I hear from a mutual friend an innocent story of how few of them got wasted the previous night… and I get all pissy for missing out and not being called, and naturally I want to discuss this with the Cappy. In following few days there was no chance for a private conversation, so I do start cooling down about it, thinking I may be neat-picking, translating everything with the worst possible connotation. I crave attention (Venus is my chart ruler and in Leo), I want him NOW! and when I don’t get what I want I SCREAM!
Venus-Moon natal square is hard when activated, I had to work on it throughout my life – am I a woman, smart and sexy, or am I a sensible (a little spoiled too) child trapped in a body of a woman?
Well… I’ve most certainly felt like the second past few days, and I was telling my self the insecurity and fear of rejection I’m going through are NOT REAL, but I still seek confirmation, and not a little sign of it, but a huge and explicit acceptance.
So under this influence I’d say stupid things like “call me when you feel like it, but bare in mind I won’t be calling you”, and then I sat in my trap for (Cappy was merciful, lol) about 36 hours looking at the phone and GTalk – waiting.
Am I falling in love? I’m afraid to think about it and I’m not quite sure how should it feel. Even better – does he feel the same? And he’s a shy guy, just as I am, it takes time for him as much as it takes for me.
Additional info: 5th HSE is ruled by Sun, 4th by Moon.
Awaiting the Moon eclipse…
@ex.blue, that first one sounds like it came out of nowhere. Given all that Leo in your family it sounds like a necessary adjustment.
Hi Jeffrey. My relationship life for the past 10 years has been marked by eclipse dates. This Solar eclipse fell in my 7th house, opposite my Venus at 7 Aquarius, what could this mean?
I have been waiting patiently for my ex, since he left me last November (he told me he was unhappy on 28th August Lunar and moved out on the Solar on 11 September which hit my Sun exact at 18′ Pisces). He is a Leo and we were together 9 years. He’s initiated almost daily contact and seen me every weekend, platonically, since around the 6th Feb eclipse. On the 21st Feb eclipse, he told a friend he thought he’d made a mistake in leaving me (but he never told me this). Since 1st August he has hardly contacted me and arranged no meetings. He has depression. On 1st August he was told he will definetly have to move away with his job, which he doesnt want to.
I have read that these eclipses mark the culmination of the past 6 months efforts. His boss decided in February to move him back apparently and for me, I have spent the past 6 months hoping we would reconcile.
The next eclipse falls in my 1st exactly conjunct my North Node at 23′36” Aquarius – what can this mean!? I cant find much info on North Nodes, but I think the North Node is attending on the Lunar Eclipse also?
Lastly – my Moon at 28′11 Leo is conjunct my ex’s Sun at 28′19” Leo, the Lunar eclipse falls nearby, by opposition, but is this too wide?
I sense this is the end of the road for us, but then I also have read that there are more eclipses to come in this series?
..sorry, I should add that my Moon is also in the 7th, so the Lunar eclipse falls opposite it in the 1st (but too wide?). The New Moon on 30th August also falls in my 7th.
HI Jeff, Wat does this leo eclipse mean if it conjuncts the vertex?I have vertex in leo at 8 degrees in 8th house, eclipse also trines my progeesd sun in Aries at 12 degrees and sextiles my natal uranus in Libra trine my nata moon, it also trines my natal Jupiter/neptune conjuction at 3 and 5 Saggitarius. Mostly interested in the vertex aspect ..thank you susan
@susanb, I haven’t worked with the Vertex.
How would this effect a Mars at 10 Leo?
Mars is sex plu, tri sun and nep and squ ura.
Unknown birthtime…
@anon, solar eclipse conjunct Mars stimulates themes related to the planet: sex, aggression, anger, work, initiation, pioneering, etc.
Not sure what effect the August solar and lunar eclipses will have on me. Natal positions: Ascendent – 18 degrees Leo; Mars – 12 degrees Leo (12th house); Sun/Neptune conjunct – 13 degrees Scorpio (4th house); Saturn – 5 degrees Aquarius (6th house); Venus – 23.48 degrees Scorpio (4th house); Moon – 24.47 degrees Aquarius (7th house). I didn’t notice much with the solar eclipse other than I completed a 3-week temporary assignment that day. I suspect that the partial lunar eclipse on the 16th will exacerbate my natal Venus-Moon square at it will be exact. Just hope it’s not as bad as my Saturn transits through Leo {shudder}.
Sasha
After I posted I checked my chart for progressions. On August 16th my progressed Mars will be at 24-25 degrees Leo and progressed Juno and Vesta at 24 and 25 degrees Virgo. Sasha
Please help me, please!!!! My sun is 8 degrees scorpio and my saturn is 16 degrees leo. His sun is 15 degrees leo with a moon 15 degrees scorpio and mercury 26 degrees leo. My birthday is the day before the sun in scorpio! What does this all mean for me? I am forever greatful for your valuable insight. Thank you SO MUCH! – Shyinxy
let me also add that his time of birth is unknown, so I used noon.
